I just saw that David Tennant has been cast to play Crowley in the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett's Good Omens. Michael Sheen has been cast to play his angelic counterpart. I had forgotten this was in the works, but I like the castings.

Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Dark and surreal the use of suspense builds to some powerful moments of terror and dread that play on some very real life fears. I thought there was some great casting and a few moving performances also a very interesting use of a story inside of a story.

Enjoyed watching the Hitman's Bodyguard this weekend. If you go expecting anything more than the sheer joy of watching the 2 loudest/fastest mouths in Hollywood going at each other then you aren't the target crowd for viewing this baby. Minimal if not down right stupid storyline but the fun is watching Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds mouthing off with some fun action sequences. Can't remember when I actually laughed out loud during a movie so much...

The Nice Guys (2016)
I can't say I'm a fan of either of the leads or that I've really seen much of their other work but this was decent. It's an interesting detective story set in the '70s with a little mystery, some exciting action sequences and a bit of humor. I thought Gosling was surprisingly funny in this.

I meant to see Atomic Blonde but it looks like it's already nearly disappeared from the local cinemas here. Anyone catch it?
I used to see a lot more movies at the theatre before they shut down all the small ones and left only the big multi-complexes. One time I would walk down the street and see something by myself on my day off, often not deciding until the last minute. It might be something none of my friends was interested in or something I myself was in two minds about or something I hadn't thought about at all but felt a sudden urge to check out. Now I have to take a bus to one of the complexes, so I never go by myself just on a whim any more, it's always something arranged beforehand and almost always with other people. Not that it's a long bus ride but even that little extra bit of planning ahead needed to get there on time now means the spontaneity isn't there any more psychologically.

It wasn't quite what I expected tonally. I was expecting more quirky and fun than gritty and serious, but it was still very good. I don't want to give anything away, so all I will say is there are a few very cool sequences that were technically impressive. I rarely go to the movies anymore on account of having a small kid. Adding the logistics and costs of working around a kid's schedule and babysitters, etc, plus general lack of free time makes it hard, though I don't really miss the experience anymore. The last 15-20 years have seen a huge decline in theater etiquette among patrons, sadly. People are so appallingly rude and selfish that I can hardly enjoy movies anymore. I know some people can handle it better than others, but I absolutely cannot stand people talking in the movie theater. It's like a homing beacon for my ears to lock in on and I can't tune it out. Even people who think they are being quiet or whispering - you're not. So, take rude people, add on to ticket price creep, ridiculous concession costs, $40 for a babysitter and compare it to the quality of home HD TVs now and supply of content on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, even renting online for $6, and it is a lot easier to skip the theaters. |

I did manage to see Atomic Blonde today and liked it quite a bit: the fight scenes were very impressive and Theron did a great job in them and in her performance in general. I often complain about the long, lean model's physique becoming too common in Hollywood, but in this case her height helps give her the physical presence that makes her action scenes and her no-bullshit persona more believable. She has the right kind of face for the part and can deliver her lines to get their effect across, in contrast to for example the Black Widow actress in the Avengers. Very impressed all-round.
Not that it's a perfect film: the plot has perhaps one or two twists too many and there was one thing in particular that was a turn-off for me personally but I can't really say what it is without giving away a spoiler. But anyway, I think it might be more a personal quirk of mine and likely wouldn't bother most viewers.
I would recommend this to any action movie fans. The director also worked on the John Wick movies so if you liked the combat scenes and the over-all style of those you'll want to see this one.

Though I have to wonder, that looks a lot like the Creature from he Black Lagoon...and they reference that he originally came from the Amazon and yet it's a film by Fox not Universal. I wonder what the rights for the creature are like?

I wonder what the rights for the creature are like? I like Del Toro's films a lot too and that looks great. |

Sean William Scott(Stiffler) says the reason you don't see him much anymore because Hollywood isn't interested in making comedies anymore... but it seems more like he's just a victim of typecasting to me as there have been plenty of great comedies of late.
