We usually make a point of seeing movies in connection with birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc. This year my wife has chosen Avengers 2 to see for Mother's Day. On the plus side, it's extremely cool that she's that much into the Marvel movies. On the negative, it means I have to wait a whole week (and try to avoid spoilers) until we can see it. <sigh>

Here's a movie that might be coming to a theater or festival near you. A local, independent filmmaker who I know has made a zombie thriller with a lot of people I know in it. It's really well-done for a low-budget indie feature. If you like gory zombie movies, this might be your cup of brains: "Flesh of My Flesh" www.hellbendermedia.com/Features_FOMF.html

Back from Avengers 2, definitely liked it. It wasn't surprising like Captain America 2 or as much fun as Guardians was (to me) and some characters were underused (but what do you want with so many characters). But it moved along nicely, had some good action scenes, some good emotional scenes and a lot of setup for future.

I'm really excited to see Avengers 2, but not sure when we can. We need someone to watch the baby, and we don't know all that many people here. My mom is out of town this weekend, and I'd hate to ask my dad to watch her alone on the weekend when my parents watch her during the week, too. Theaters are WAY too loud these days to bring her (if they weren't, it would only be to one of those first-thing-in-the-morning-with-other-parents-and-small-kids showings, not a regular showing - I detest rude moviegoers!). Might have to wait until next week. I will have to try so hard not to get spoiled.

So we went to see Avengers Age of Ultron this afternoon, and it was interesting watching audience reaction to the trailers. It started with the Rock's San Andreas which had people rolling their eyes and mocking it, then went to Ant-Man, which the audience was laughing at all the jokes and cheering and getting excited, then into Star Wars The Force Awakens which had people yelling "is it December yet" and applauding at the end of it. Then came Batman vs. Superman, and there was dead silence, then people groaning and rolling their eyes once the defaced Superman statue came into focus and outright catcalling and booing of the trailer (worse than San Andreas got) by the end of it. An audince of "geeks" and general public who were outright cheering Ant-Man and Star Wars were booing a Superman/Batman trailer. I don't think this was the reaction WB/DC was hoping for, and I am not sure it bodes well for the success of the movie.

Okay. Now that everyone's seen Avengers: Age of Ultron, I hope a few folks will give Ex Machina a try.

I liked Sin City: A Dame to Kill For a lot. But I loved The Spirit. Both of these were visually arresting films, but neither story really grabbed me. Both are worth checking out just for the visuals, though. The Spirit is available again on Hulu+plus for nine more days. ( www.hulu.com/the-spirit )

New Mad Max was very good. Little time wasted on plot at first glance, but the characters do go through development during the whole story and it shows that you don't need exposition or long dialogues. For a movie that's one long action scene, there is a lot more going on under the surface.
