as many of y'all are aware, i got married two weeks ago.
so we just got our marriage license original back in the mail yesterday, and we've already framed it.
the question is. . . where do we hang it?
I'm just fine, hanging it in the one of the main hallways of our home (along with the Ketubah, the Jewish Marriage agreement, which we've also had framed).
but Nick says he's never seen folks display theirs in the 'main' home, and thinks we should put it in our bedroom.
I'm OK with that too, but just wondering. . do others display their official license? if so, where?

We do not display ours. I did not know people did that? Now I am wondering if we should.

I don't even know where mine is!
If I had to fight for the right to get married, I'm sure I would display it proudly, as it would hold significance to me. But, as I never had to worry about that, I didn't really give much thought to the legal significance of marriage until years after I was already married and the fight for gay marriage became more pronounced in America. Prior to that, I treated it the same as I did my driver's license -- it was something I was required to have, but getting the car and driving it were what mattered to me. In the same way, I needed a marriage license, but actually having the ceremony and living together were what was important in my mind.
Granted, that's because I never had to worry about not getting a marriage license.

I cannot speak for the US, but I have never seen a marriage licence on display in Australia. I assume most folks just file it away with their other legal documents.

Shax is correct! But I have no suggestions as to where you should put it. I would be tempted to put it somewhere so that it is the first thing people see when they walk in your home. But that is me.

I don't know if it's related to the rise of acceptance and recognition of the lgbtq community's right to marry or not but I've definitely noticed more people displaying their licences in their homes. Neither my parents or any of my aunts and uncles displayed theirs but about ten years back when I attended my cousin's wedding there was a fair bit of conversation about how they displayed their licence at the reception and then later in their home and since then all of my friends who were married have attached significance to their licences, either displaying it in their bedrooms, on their mantles or in the case of my sister in law to be in their wedding album(which I liked).
So, in my observation anyway, it's a growing trend.

I like that there's meaning attached to the license, but when my friend Adam showed me how they put it right over their bed it kind of weirded me out for some reason.

Do you have a framed wedding picture of the two of you hanging anywhere in the house? You might hang the license on display under the framed wedding picture wherever you have that, of if you have a wedding album you keep out as a coffee table type book, display the license on the cover of the album and make it part of the memory artifact the wedding album is, but still there for all to see.
We do not have ours on display (the only wedding ephemera on display are a few pictures and the broom we jumped over in the ceremony), but as others have said, it has been sort of taken for granted in the hetero community, but I would definitely display it with pride if I had had to fight for that document as others have had to.

Very cool you kept the broom. . my friends who got married in Vancouver two years ago kept the broom too! we DID keep the broken glass from the stomped vessels, and I might shadowbox those along w/ the menus/invites/eventual "hard" pics. Thanks for the feedback everyone! I've convinced Nick that I don't want to hide it in the bedroom, so on the slanted wall of the Foyer it goes: - if folks are in the Formal Dining Room, it can't be seen straight on, if folks are in the kitchen it can't be seen. Ditto if in the living room/bedrooms/bathrooms. . . but it's in the Main Foyer, and everyone will pass right by it, and easy to stop and see. so I'm happy w/ the placement now need to go get copies of it, so we can have it filed away for joint bank accounts, hospital visits, etc. . basically, anything we will need to PROVE we're married to do.

We discussed in the bedroom, (or just in the records box). .but decided in the Foyer.

If I had been forbidden to marry by small-minded people for decades and suddenly had the right to, I would certainly display my marriage licence.
Living in a very tolerant society and being part of the bland majority that never gets annoyed by anyone, my wife and I do not. In fact, I don't even think we have one... I think here the mention that we're married just gets added to our government files and that's it.
