Thank you. I will probably get the Delux HC, though. There are three different things that you could mean by "The Deluxe HC" Do you mean The Gallery Edition? That does, indeed, start at the beginning, but it's way out of my price range. More power to you if that's how you're going to experience the series for the first time! When I am ready to purchase, I will figure it out. I am not ready right now. I am new to this series, so I will make sure to have everything straight before making my first purchase. Thanks for the concern for my wallet, though.

Usagi Yojimbo is great because you can basically pick it up and start from anywhere. Many stories are single issues and others are only a few issues long. BUT, I think it is best to start from the beginning. Stan's style has changed a lot over the years, so I think it is great to not only watch the evolution of Usagi as a character, but the style in which he is presented. With some many years of Usagi Yojimbo, and so many issues out there, it is a daunting task, but IMHO will be worth it.

Thanks for the concern for my wallet, though. The volumes I list in the original post are all very affordable, but you might check your local library too. Many libraries carry Usagi Yojimbo. It's a good place to start if you're not sure you want to start making a financial investment in the series. But no pressure, of course. I just get psyched when people are curious about checking out an amazing series

Checked Amazon, and the hardcover would be nice, but it's selling for $116 which is a little too rich for me.
The Special Edition looks more my speed, but at $48 I'll probably put that off until my upcoming birthday in May. I just bought a pile of 50 cent comics at a show yesterday, so that took care of my budget for a while. But over 1000 pages for $48 is a pretty good deal.

I went there, and when I clicked on hardcover, it was NOT showing those prices last night. I would get the TPB, not HC.

Yeah, you've got to be a hardcore fan to really see the value in that. Maybe some day It really is. The Special Edition covers every Usagi appearance from 1984 thru 1993; his first nine years in print. That's the entire first Fantagraph volume, as well as the numerous appearances he made in other publications before and during that run. Originally, it was all sold in seven separate trade paperbacks, each selling for around $20. So, yes, a very very good bargain.

For what it's worth, the softcover actually looks a lot handsomer than the hardcover (I have the hardcover). The hardcover saga editions are gorgeous (and all but the first one are on sale on Amazon right now), but Fantagraph didn't do quite as an impressive job with the Special Edition HC.

I will definitely be in touch with you before I purchase any Usagi Yojimbo anythings because I trust you will advise me well.

Oh also, the Special Edition HC is pretty expensive, since I believe it too is sold out. The soft covers came out not so long ago and are fairly inexpensive for the amount of comics in there. I'm also going to contact Dark Horse to see when the Saga one's, TPH, will be available again.

Even the ones I think are easy I can get wrong. (Gen)

I thought Tomoe was pronounced "To-mo", but last year I read on the old UY website that it is "To-mo-eh" (which is why it's spelled Tomoeh at the end of the first Space Usagi story). I'm no expert, though, so I could definitely be wrong.
