I know I looked it up before, but I don't remember the answer, is that the same Major Disaster that fridged Kyle Rayner's girlfriend and was killed by Guy later? Clearly, the look is not at all similar, but zero hour did happen in between. That was Major Force  |

That was Major Force Somehow I had in my head it was the same guy.. not sure why. Major Force was another creation of the Captain Atom project, from Cap's late 1980s run. He was basically an ex-military psychopath with Captain Atom's powers. Major Disaster was a Siver Age super villain who could create natural disasters. He's clashed with heroes including Green Lantern, Karate Kid, Superman and the Outsiders, and later reformed and joined a branch of the Justice League. |

Invasion! #3  "World Without Heroes" plot and breakdowns: Keith Giffen script: Bill Mantlo pencils: Bart Sears inks: Joe Rubinstein and Tom Christopher letters: Gaspar colors: Gene D'Angelo assoc. editor: Kevin Dooley editor: Andrew Helfer grade: n/a As a reminder, since the focus of this thread is on the Justice League, I will only be discussing aspects of this event/issue that concern the Justice League (thus the "n/a" grade). It's clear that each major event DC has launched since Crisis on Infinite Earths has, at its center, been about launching a new superhero team. Legends launched both the new Justice League and the Suicide Squad, Millennium launched the New Guardians, and here DC is trying to launch The Blasters. My point in bringing this up is that, of all of these teams, it's clear by this point that only one of them has unequivocally succeeded. While Suicide Squad remains a critical success, it's not a commercial one, and the team receives a one page cameo in this 80 page finale, The New Guardians (the center of last year's event) get less than that, and I've never even heard of The Blasters until now, so I know that team isn't going anywhere. The JLI, in contrast, utterly dominate this book, and Giffen really takes the time to further develop some of the membership as a result. Max Lord is now reluctantly involved with Lex Luthor, which may or may not matter in future issues:  And, despite Lord trying to convince himself that his only motives are financial, we see in this story that he truly does care about Earth's heroes, pushing himself to the point of exhaustion in an effort to help:  Additionally, while the Suicide Squad gets largely forgotten in this event, Amanda Waller, herself, gets the spotlight as an adorable counterpart to Max:   I also like this little surprise moment Giffen gives to Guy, who he otherwise plays up as his normal jerk self throughout Invasion!:  Finally, Giffen continues to "get to know" J'onn J'onzz in this issue. Whereas the character was being woefully underutilized for the first two years of the JLI run, Giffen suddenly realized J'onn had invisibility powers (and made use of them) in JLI #20, and now this issue depends upon J'onn's abilities to read minds and change his appearance, two powers that would have been very useful in several previous JLI adventures had Giffen been thinking of them. Perhaps most importantly though, Giffen finally realizes and makes a point of the fact that Fire's superhuman ability is J'onn's sole weakness:  I mean that's GOT TO come up again later on, right? Could you imagine Superman working on the same team as The Kryptonite Man?? No long term ramifications for the team to be found in this story, but Giffen sure did a lot to explore Max, Guy, and J'onn further. |

I don't think launching the Blasters as a new team was ever really a priority; aside from their appearances in Invasion itself, they only appeared in one Special at the time, and were then basically forgotten until their creator brought them back in Valor #5 three years later.

I don't think launching the Blasters as a new team was ever really a priority; aside from their appearances in Invasion itself, they only appeared in one Special at the time, and were then basically forgotten until their creator brought them back in Valor #5 three years later. Well they are given a lot of time in this issue, and the upcoming special does get plugged. Could be the special was a try-out and sales didn't end up impressing. |

Well, it only took me three years to get around to it, but I've finally finished restoring this thread to its former glory (Photobucket started holding the images used in these reviews for ransom in 2017, which put a temporary stop to all of my review threads until I restored each one, image by image, using a different hosting service). No promises that I'll be posting new reviews in the immediate future, though I am considering it. In the meantime, please enjoy the 41 pages worth of reviews that I've revived from the dark recesses of the web for your reading pleasure!

I'm toying with the idea of getting the Superman thread caught up to the Batman thread, getting this thread caught up to both, and then proceeding with all three at the same time. Then again, school just started, so we'll have to see how my time management skills fare in the age of remote teaching! |

The first and most obvious, perhaps, would be Wonder Woman. I know there's a WW Readathon thread out there already, but it's been (seemingly) abandoned and I think I'd enjoy your take on Perez high-profile relaunch.
Another would be Green Lantern. I'd skip the mostly forgettable ACW stories, and maybe run from the two Emerald Dawn minis through "Emerald Twilight". If you're adventurous, there's also GL: Mosaic, GL Corps Quarterly, and Guy Gardner you could intertwine.
Some "new" post-COIE concepts like Checkmate! or Suicide Squad would also be fun, and considerably less time consuming.

I've also toyed with starting in the Silver Age and taking it all the way up to Parallax. I'm not sure I care enough about either property to commit to such a project, but I'm willing to be convinced. |

I don't think I've ever spoken to anyone that didn't love Ostrander's Suicide Squad; only people that haven't read it yet... |

Green Lantern was one of my first favorite heroes. I always loved the unlimited imagination embedded in the concept, so the Silver Age adventures seem appealing to me, though the execution may be lacking. I don't want inner conflict and turmoil from Hal; I want giant green baseball gloves. I may have to try it. I've read a few issues and wasn't wowed, but I'm open to reading more. |
