Joe Staton really was a poor choice for this type of series. Staton has some strengths, but large groups of people where each has to be distinct visually is not one of them. He is a very good visual storyteller, but his style is very ill-suited for event comics. I think the strength of his collaboration with Englehart on GL Corps made him the Stainless one's choice for this book, but it doesn't really deliver a good final product here.

Despite how badly the art compares to McGuire, seeing thos panels make me kinda' want to go reread Millennium: I just really dig large groups of super heroes hangin' out talkin'. You must love Bendis. Late to the party as always, but I just binged this thread from the beginning and caught up! It's inspired me to dig out my old JLI issues. I think I'll have them custom bound, considering DC dropped the ball on the trades... Oh, and Joe Staton's work sucks in general, but Millennium was particularly bad.

It's a shame that a very bad crossover is part of your JLA review. You take the good, you take the bad; you take them both and there you have the comic industry. The comic industry. When DC never seems to be living up your dream, then suddenly you're finding out the industry was never about you. You. (a no-prize for the first old-timer to get the reference ) If you won't Tootie your own horn, no one else will do it for you. But thanks anyway for providing a Rae of sunshine on the boards, via this post and your Natalie-attired icon.

His GLC run was decent, but that's it...

What are you thinking of that's so terrible?
The bulk of his work was for Charlton. I can't imagine any sentient comic fan would say that E-Man "sucks." (Or his horror stuff, either.)

I don't think the bulk of his work was for Charlton since '78 (to pick a time when his DC page count probably outpaced what he did for Derby). Joe's pretty dependent on his inker, but I'd include Huntress, Plastic man (in Adventure), Batman Adventures, Scooby Doo, and others as solid jobs.

Aside from the previously mentioned Green Lantern Corps and Cavalieri's The Huntress (thanks for the reminder, MDG!), his stuff has always been ugly to me. From later work on Millenium to Jones' GL to Guy Gardner, I've always found it too cartoony... contorted... just blegh. Of course this is all obviously one man's opinion, as I realize he has his fans. If nothing else, I admire his work ethic/volume of output.

Unsurprisingly Millenium is the line of demarcation where I stop caring about superhero comics for a decade-or-so. I guess he drew a Millenium spin-off with all the characters introduced? And it lasted 14 issues. That is hillarious. And I may be wrong about his volume of work, but I think his strongest work (by far!) was at Charlton - and I'm 80% sure that even in this contentious bunch nobody's gonna disagree with me. He probably was ill-suited for the post-DRK Grim 'n Gritty era at DC, for sure.

I'm not familiar with his Charlton work, so fair enough.
The spin off series you mention was The New Guardians, and yes, it was absolutely horrendous across the board...

As noted in the credit for reviews, Joe Staton was doing layouts on Millennium, not finished pencils. Ian Gibson did the finishes. Gibson was the guest artist on a couple issues of GLC, and the Millennium art has a very Gibson feel to it. I find it odd to judge Staton's art by just his layouts.

If he's Bob Layton inking him, then it moves up to good.

By the way Shaxper,
When did we switch Dr. Fates? I think it was Millennium #1. I know the switch happens by the time JLI #10 comes out.
