Free updates are about to run out and there's still nothing at all that makes me want to upgrade to W10. Eventually, when I build a new machine, I'll probably be forced to for hardware support. At the moment, the only remotely desirable thing I see in W10 is the font scaling for high-res screens, and as I don't currently have a 4K screen or uncorrectable vision problems, it's not an issue - I can comfortably read my 2960 x 1600 screen on small fonts

My mom recently got a laptop with Windows 8 on it that's been pestering her to get the free upgrade to Windows 10. I really don't know what to tell her other than it seems like 10 just takes everything bad about 8 and amplifies it a hundred fold, but most of that is what I've read or heard about, not something that I've experienced first hand

As soon as 10 was available, I upgraded. I had no problems with the upgrade and no issues since (though I wish Cortana would stop pestering me. If I want help, I'll ask for it, dammit). I really don't see how 10 amplifies 8's issues, it really corrects many of them (notably the lack of start menu). My suggestion would remain the same. If she's happy with her current operating system, she should keep it. There's always a risk with any major upgrade (as Shax unfortunately found out  ). The only downside to keeping 8 would be official support will end sooner for 8 than 10, but that's not likely to be an issue for years. |

Well, I'll look into it some more seeing as how there's still time left before the free upgrade offer ends and if there's one thing I hate, it's being ignorant and ill-informed about something

My computer automatically updated just now, I was initially scared because while it was updating the image on the screen kept screwing up but it seems okay now. I literally just got it back so I've no clue how its different than 8 other than it has cortana in the corner now and the sign in page was blue instead of green.

I literally just got it back so I've no clue how its different than 8 other than it has cortana in the corner now and the sign in page was blue instead of green. I haven't yet and I'm still awaiting for my nephew's approval before installing it. I'm a bit nervous myself and I loved my Windows 7 more so than Windows XP! |

Just want to remind everyone that my Windows 7 laptop is now an expensive paperweight because I tried the Windows 10 upgrade. No way to fix it without having a Windows 7 CD (which I don't).

My computer was only three years old and in that time all I've done is use it for netflix, word processing, posting here and comixology so it was in good shape. I was still nervous when it auto-updated but it came out alright in the end for me. |

You can make one pretty easily. You're timing is funny; I actually just did this today. Had to use a pirated serial number since my computer came with a licensed copy of Windows 7 but no tag or manual, but it worked. I just can't ever run a windows update now  And I keep my stuff backed up pretty well, so I didn't lose much. |

I just can't ever run a windows update now And I keep my stuff backed up pretty well, so I didn't lose much. Since you're using a pirated SN it doesn't matter now, but if you ever get a legit copy again there is a way to get your computer to tell you your product key. Just run this script and it'll pull the key from your registry. I keep the key in a notepad file and have it backed up in a few places, just in case. |

Yeah, not proud of using a pirated serial number, but it was Microsoft's fault my licensed version got destroyed, so I figure it was only fair. Why should I have to buy their OS twice because they screwed me?
