I've spoken about this before in other threads, but I learned a long while back that if you use PCs and don't need top of the line performance, the smartest thing to do is to buy previously owned computers from reliable manufacturers (Dell is usually completely trustworthy) that are two to four years old. Businesses liquidate these things for a fraction of the original sales price on ebay, they work FINE, will last you around five years, and they also prevent you from having to upgrade to a new Windows platform before the reviews are in.
If I'd bought my last computer new, I would have had to go the Windows 8 route; no way out. By buying used, I can pick the platform it comes preloaded with. Heck, when I buy a solid two year old computer for $250 with Windows 7 loaded, I essentially paid for the OS and got the computer free.

I upgraded to Windows 10, but after reading this thread I wonder if that was a mistake. When I boot up my computer, I'm asked if I want to open with Windows 10 or "System Restore." If I choose System Restore, will that automatically uninstall Windows 10, or will it still be available for next time? I'm not quite ready to give up on Win 10; if I uninstall it, can I reinstall it later? Frankly, the most annoying problem is that my Games folder is empty, and I don't know how to fill it. I like to play solitaire while I'm waiting for stuff to open. My computer tends to run verryyy ..... slooowwwllyy. I'm not sure how much of my problem is malware and how much is too much anti-malware. I have Avast Free, AVG Free and IObit Pro. How can I disable one or two; or do I have to uninstall them? Please give me the Dummies' version; I don't understand Geek-speak.

There's a lot involved in answering all of this. You probably need a computer geek to sit at your computer for an hour or two and see exactly what's going on. Know anyone? Easiest step to take is to hit CTRL ALT DELETE, go to task manager, hit the button at the bottom that lets you see tasks for all users, and then look through the list of everything running on your computer and try to figure out both what's taking up the most memory and also what's there that looks suspicious/unwelcome. That's your starting point for determining a problem, anyway. From there, maybe I can help with the solution. [/quote]

I've followed your advice as best I can, and I've also removed some items from the start menu. I know a computer geek who is currently looking at my other PC; the only way I know to contact him is to visit his workplace.

When I recently bought a refurbished computer, I chose one (Dell) with Windows 7. I think I'll heed the advice in this thread and postpone any upgrades; my experience with Windows 10 was not completely satisfactory. What annoyed me most was that the Games folder was empty, and I couldn't figure out how to download and install my favorites. (I'm a solitaire fan). In nearly every other computer I've had, the games came pre-installed.

Microsoft have just extended Windows 7 critical support for a year, provided you're on a relatively modern processor (ie SkylakeWe're writing to let you know about updates to the Windows Skylake support policy that we just announced. "On January 15th, Microsoft outlined its support policies for new silicon architectures. Since then, customers at various stages of planning and deployment of Windows 10 have expressed that they would benefit from some additional time to manage these migrations. Based on this feedback, we just announced a few updates to our Skylake support policy: 1. To help provide greater flexibility for customers who have longer deployment timeframes to Windows 10, the support period for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices on Skylake systems will be extended by one year: from July 17, 2017 to July 17, 2018. 2. Also, after July 2018, all critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates will be addressed for Skylake systems until extended support ends for Windows 7, January 14, 2020 and Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023. This policy update is designed to help organizations such as yours purchase modern hardware with confidence, while continuing to manage their migrations to Windows 10. As you upgrade to Windows 10 on Skylake devices, you can benefit from the latest capabilities that come from modern hardware and software. Further details are available on a TechNet blog here" That doesn't really help you much if you're on anything but this year's architecture, but does potentially mean you have another upgrade cycle on Win7 without being forced to go to Win10

Tried the update on my laptop today since it was having some minor driver issues I thought the update might fix. What a disaster. It lost some of my Internet protocols in the upgrade, making it impossible for my computer to go online. I am undoing the update right now and posting from my phone.
Also, if you do decide to upgrade, watch those custom settings carefully. In addition to making all of windows' new programs your defaults for every kind of media and program on your computer, it defaults to reporting your keystrokes to windows!
It also deleted my open office program from my computer without saying a word. Way to wipe out the competition silently.
Yeah, I'm disgusted.

Oh good. Now my computer experienced problems trying to undo the update and is "attempting repairs".
SAVE YOURSELVES. DO NOT UPDATE TO WINDOWS 10.

Looks like my computer is officially bricked. Yeah, that's why I'm not upgrading I have windows 8 and its working out fine for my needs and I expect given the age of my laptop it would not like being updated.

I had a neighbor of mine who upgraded one of his PC that has Windows 7 on it a couple of days ago and because of that his PC is out of whack and he had to take it to a Computer Specialist to get it back to Windows 7. It's turns out it's cost him $155 to get it back and he complained to Microsoft about it and waiting for their response. It took the Computer Specialist 3 hours to get his PC back the way it was.
According to the Computer Specialist - 4 out of 10 PC's having issues with (to Windows 10) upgrades and he worked on 56 PC's so far. He managed to get it back to either Windows 7 or 8.
