I'm still trying to winnow down my mile-long list...

Am I the only one who doesn't get his pictures and write up ready till the day of? No, I'm the same. I have my list worked out in advance, of course, but I write each post and get pictures off 'tiniternet the very same day I post it. Always have done. I didn't want to be in that predicament this year, but I am.

Well I think my 12 is finalized and the order, we'll see. looks like 10 men, 2 women 3 whose work first appeared outside of America, 9 whose work was for the American market 1 newspaper strip creator, 11 comic creators(though one of those appeared in newspapers as well) 4 who have done work for the big 2 that I know of, but none are best known for their big 2 work (another of whom had work collected and released by one of the big 2 but the work was not produced for them) most of my favorite writer/artists who did primarily super-hero work found themselves missing the cut and among the honorable mentions, as did 2 of my 3 favorite strip artists. Several of the creators I might have listed as all time favorites wound up missing the cut (but mostly because the largest body of their work was done in collaboration rather than solo heavy lifting). There's no guarantee I won't read or reread something between now and the start that reminds me how much I like the work of a particular creator and decide to alter things. So can't wait to see what other folks come up with. -M In reading (or re-reading) a few things in the near week since I posted this, there were a few tweaks to my list...big surprise. -M

Looking over my final list, I think I added an element to the heavy lifting that Cei-U did not as my deciding factor. Creator. None of my 12 were there for their cartooning on characters created by other people. I left off some people whose work I absolutely adore, but when push came to shove and I started prioritizing the name son my list to include, those who did the biggest heavy lifting i.e. creating the characters and concepts in the book took priority over those who worked on other people's stuff. So a couple of creators whose praises I have sung to the heavens here and at the old place would up below the top 12 on my list because of it, and some, who pay attention to my ramblings might be surprised by some of the omissions. That said, several top notch cartoonists who created the concepts they worked on and whose work I adored still got left off the list for any number of reasons, and if I were to do this list again at the end of January it would probably be completely different.

I am keeping alive my own 12 Days tradition by revising my list after I've started posting. Looking down my list of choices, I realised I left off a favourite who definitely deserves a spot and so began the rejigging.

The lists thus far show I have major blind spots in undergrounds, manga and non-American comics in general.
I'm a bad nerd.

I've historically been a write-on-last day guy, but now for the first time I have a scanner. And I'm leaving my comics collection and scanner behind to go home for the holidays. So I wanted to get all my scanning in at least before I left, which meant having some idea what I wanted to day.

Looking down my list of choices, I realised I left off a favourite who definitely deserves a spot and so began the rejigging. My lists are almost always a work in progress. There are usually four or five that are absolutely solid picks and the rest can change with little or no warning.

Same with me. I'm pretty much making it up as I go along, though I'm reasonably sure about my top 5 or 6. But I'm going to have to drop at least one more name that I had been sure would make my final list until I recounted them today.

The saddest thing for me about this year's Classic Comics Christmas is that it appears that dear old Dan Bailey (Dan B. in the Underworld) isn't participating. I breifly spoke to him a day or two back on Facebook and he's well enough, I think, but is just really snowed under with other commitments. Still, I miss his contributions to the event and seeing him about in the forum generally.

Okay, I'm an idiot. It kicks off Sunday, not tomorrow. I've spent all day thinking today was Saturday. Sheesh. Cei-U! I summon the calendar confusion! I have a question that has maybe already been tackled though : If a chosen cartoonist has been acclaimed for work anterior to late 2005, can we feature as well some of his work of the past 10 years, if said cartoonist is already a classic and we feature at least some of said "classic" work as well?

Yeah, I'm cool with that, as long as the emphasis is on the eligible work. Cei-U! I summon the glad tidings!
