I was recently considering doing a "AGS reads Aliens comics" thread, as I noticed that most of those were much much more than mere license milking. The recent crossover with Prometheus and Predator was pretty odd, probably in a good way. John Arcudi's mini from like 5-6 years ago was very disturbing. I will also probably buy the upcoming relaunched series they have planned as the creative team seems very capable of delivering intriguing stories (Brian Wood and Tristan Jones) I agree though that those Xenogenesis ones seem to be terrible, and I feel lucky I passed them. but until those, it's probably the best licensed comic ever IMHO. Well if you ever do I'd be totally in for participating and reading along with of what I have. I'd even be up to helping or compiling some major appearances outside the self titled series to read a long too. |

That's about 100-110 hours spent on 6000 issues. which would be like one hour per 60 issues. What did your collection mostly consist of back then? I'm genuinely interested  Hmmm, my math (as usual) must be suspect because no way did I read 60 comics an hour, even with my skipping letters pages, Bullpen Bulletins, etc. As for my collection, it was about 80% Marvel titles at the time, the rest being a mix of DC, undergrounds and the odd Gold Key, King or Charlton. Cei-U! I summon Evelyn Wood! I was asking since those statistics of 1 comic book per miute would either obliterate the currently discussed myth (?) that atomic/golden/silver/bronze age comics were much more dense read than current publicatoins, or that you are some sort of closet alien invader with different mind-skills  Or just that the math was indeed very optimistic, hehe. |

How awesome would it be if aliens came to Earth and decided that their top priority was discussing classic comics? Finally proof of Extra-Terrestrial intelligence! Plus I would feel better about the whole aliens visiting thing, as opposed to the old Robin Williams routine where he said about the aliens "they weren't the cute little guys we thought they were. They were big, and they were green, and they were pissed". |

I typically cannot binge read unless it's a new modern comic. Those things have, like, 5 words in the entire book, so yeah. I read all of AVX in one 2 hour span. But that isn't really anything since, it probably had 50 words the entire event. hahahaha. I can read, SOMETIMES, 3 silver age books in one sitting. But I don't usually have the time to just sit there and read for that long. Sometimes I even have to take a break in a panel. The last single panel in Amazing Spidey #20 has over 120 words. That's like 3-5 pages of text in a current Spidey book.  |

From time to time, if I couldn't find a particular tradebook at the library, I'd read the whole thing in one sitting at Barnes & Nobles. I last did that at the beginning of the year with a Fables collection, I think it was 8-10 issues long I'd think coke & comics, during a wired up session, would have us all beat I've done that... with 6 or 7 different trades. Repeatedly. I'm not quite Cei-U but I can get through 30 modern comics in a sitting easily - and probably slightly less than half that # of golden/silver age books. I read really fast, but have a terrible, terrible memory for what actually happened in stuff I read. |

I usually don't read a lot of comics literally in one sitting, without any breaks. X-Men: From the Ashes is the TPB I've re-read the most times. That runs 9 issues. There are probably times that I've read it nearly all the way through, with just a small bathroom break or getting up to stretch my legs. When I was reading the Essential Spider-Man volumes reprinting the Lee/Romita run, I probably read a chunk of 6 or 8 issues at one point. You can really get into a groove reading those.
But those are rare exceptions. I need some breaks. For me, reading so many issues back-to-back would be a chore rather than fun. Reading is more active than watching a movie, so reading too much in row probably doesn't let me pay the proper attention. I do binge read Essentials, but I mean that in the sense of reading the whole volume without going over to other stuff. I usually do that over the course of 2 or 3 weeks. If I'm really into it, I may go through an Essential in a week. And I probably have done an Essential in a weekend, but that would be broken up in many small chunks of 2 to 4 issues.

Having two kids, getting enough time to read 3-4 issues straight is hard enough, although sometimes I can reach 6-8 issues in one sitting if my wife takes the girls out for the day. I have been able to read an entire Fables TPB in one sitting when a new one was released, which is about 10 issues, so that is probably my record.

Jeez, no wonder my math looked "optimistic": I went back and looked at my original post just now and realized I wrote "2 and a half weeks" when I meant "2 and a half months." When I was a child, I would read several Archie digests in one sitting. Probably 2 or 3. Also, when I was younger, I would read probably 5-6 issues of a comic in one sitting. Now, I have several Marvel Masterworks or DC Archives or omnibus editions of 50s. 60s, and 70s stories. I enjoy them because they take longer to read and are much more detailed than modern comics. I am not a big fan of modern comics with their $4 price and it only takes 5 minutes or less to read them.

Love Archies, especially the classic 256 page digests but I think I'd read through about 1/2 at most before starting to fidget with something else. |
