An 8 part documentary series focusing on 80s toylines will be dropping on Netflix on Dec. 22. Each episode will focus on one toy line, I believe it includes Transformers,Star Wars, Lego, Barbie, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, GI Joe and others. There's a third party preview of it on youtube and you can check out the official Facebook page of the documentary for more info and behind the scenes looks. I believe only the first 4 episodes will drop on the 22nd with 4 more to follow and an option for more to be made/aired if it does well. A lot of the vintage toy shops and dealers in the area have been talking this up and promoting it with posters/flyers, etc. at shows and in their shops. This is probably stuff for the generation after me (I was in jr. high and high school when most of these hit) so there isn't the nostagia factor for anything but Star Wars of those mentioned, but I am curious to see this and hope it does well so we can get more of this type of programming. -M

Toy Galaxy has been doing mini documentaries on '80s toys on Youtube for a while now. I find them informative:
Might check out the documentary. Thanks for the head's up.

As for the others, I will probably watch them just from a curiosity standpoint, but I have no nostalgic connection to He-Man or Transformers, as I owned none of the former and only a handful of the latter, given to me as gifts by relatives who weren't aware I had outgrown toys by that point.

I was too old for Star Wars toys or Masters of the Universe. I'll probably watch the episodes based on my interest.

Children of the '80s are far enough into their careers that they have disposable cash and a yearning for simpler times.

To the extent I have nostalgia about the 80s it's not for toys. But I also understand that not everything is about me. Though it should be.

I know the dudes from the Mego Museum contributed to the series and Mego gets a look (maybe not a whole episode though) and the GI Joe and Barbie episodes are supposed to cover the entirety of the those lines not just the 80s stuff, so while 80s (and even 90s now) nostalgia is what is fueling the bulk of the vintage toy business these days, and the series is driven by that since that is what drives the people who made it, there is at least nods to earlier stuff. -M

Some of the earlier stuff is amazing. Worshipped Mego figures as a kid and was always sad they didn't sell them anymore.

Megos were a childhood favorite, and I have dabbed in some of the Re-Mego stuff (the term used for people making Mego-style stuff now like Figures Toy Company), but I haven't pulled the trigger on anything vintage Mego yet, and price-wise it might be a bit beyond what I am willing to pay for vintage stuff as a casual collector. I have gone in on vintage Mego Micronaut stuff though, but I doubt we will see it in the documentary unless it is mentioned as a pre-cursor/forerunner of Teansformers with it's interchangeability and presence of Japanese themed robot. -M

I just would have loved a complete Mego Batman set -- Wayne Foundation, Batcave, Batmobile, Bat Copter, and all the figures (including the removable cowl Batman). Pocket Heroes were awesome too. I had a Superman and a Hulk.

I still have my Megos (in various states of repair). Including the Batcave, though the Batmobile bit the dust when I was a kid. And I let my boys play with them rather than sit on a shelf. They're toys, for Pete's Sake.

I just found out the folks who do Comic Trips (the youtube series Bronze Age Brian introduced me too a while back) are in the first episode of the Toys That Made Us as the producers of the show contacted Paul & Kat to ask about using footage from some of their episodes. Sometime the collecting world is smaller (and bigger at the same time) than you realize.
