Jock qualifies though, having published material prior to 2000, and even an issue of Hellblazer in 2003, as for Horror Ah, his stuff didn't hit my radar until Green Arrow Year One, and his horror stuff I only recently discovered. -M

I hadn't thought of Jock, but yes he is awesome but although his moody style is perfect for horror I haven't really seen much horror work from him other than his recent cover work.

Have you checked out Wytches? Jock's art carries that series despite Snyder's continuous shortcomings as a writer (maybe if Jock illustrated some of the horror shorts Snyder wrote in Voodoo Hearts they might actually be palatable). -M

Runner up #2 Ben Templesmith His dark, scratchy art just screams horror. It's like something out of a nightmare, light on details but deeply powerful on a very visceral level.

#3 Kelley Jones I love how angular and sinewy his art is, it's like everything is some kind of predatory beast even the inanimate objects like like Batman's cape take on lives of their own.

I generally like Kelly Jones' art, but I didn't like his Deadman. (He can go a little overboard on Batman too)

I had seriously considered Ben Templesmith, he fits very well with my preference for Horror artists that REALLY disturb.

I like Templesmith as well, but then you should go for the old Ashley Wood stuff, as Templesmith is merely a more cartoonish version of it, probably due to a more limited set of anatomical skills. He actually took over Wood on Hellspawn back in the day, when they both were mostly getting started on the US market. Templesmith might even have been a student or studio mate of Wood if memory serves right.

If I did it again, the list might change a bit, but Wrightson would remain #1, and the next time it could change again, but till Wrightson, #1-that's the only spot set in stone, the rest might alter a bit among the 2-5 spots and runner-ups. -M
