RIP to Eugene "Mercury" Morris, former NFL running back who starred on the early 1970s Miami Dolphins teams, including the team that went undefeated. He was 77. My silly Mercury Morris memory: In hs, our health teacher was the school's football coach, and Mercury Morris was often his choice D in multiple choice tests as an obvious wrong answer to help make it easier for his players to pass. -M

I always thought he had the ultimate name for a halfback. And what was great was he was paired with the guy who had the perfect name for a fullback, Larry CSONKA. They just sounded like guys who should be playing those positions. It was also interesting how Morris would gather with the old Dolphins to celebrate when the last undefeated team each season finally lost a game so he could crow over the '72 Dolphins still being the only unbeaten team in history. It was obnoxious but also sort of endearing that it still meant so much to him and all those players after so many years.

Dame Maggie Smith had exited the stage at age 89.

Dame Maggie Smith had exited the stage at age 89. Dame Maggie Smith had many outstanding roles, but I first encountered her work when she played Thetis in Clash of the Titans (it's also where I first encountered Sir Laurence Olivier). -M

Apologies for the pedantry.

Maggie Smith was always great, in stuff like California Suite, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Gosford Park, Downton Abbey, etc. One of my favorites was one I stumbled across...Hot Millions, with Peter Ustinov. He's a con artist who assumes the identity of a computer programmer, as a conglomerate, and embezzles money through checks generated to various phony businesses he sets up. Smith is a secretary he falls in love with (and vice versa) and marries and who legitimately invests some of his stolen money. It's a lighthearted caper/romance, with a a more character-oriented casting than others, with more leading actor types. It's a bit of a darker humor, but is surprisingly sweet.
Co-starring Karl Malden and Bob Newhart!
Here's a clip of Maggie at work....

ps Not to mention as a pseudo Nora Charles (Dora Charleston) to David Niven's Nick (Dick Charleston), in Neil Simon's Murder By Death.

ps Not to mention as a pseudo Nora Charles (Dora Charleston) to David Niven's Nick (Dick Charleston), in Neil Simon's Murder By Death. I was about to mention that one. I love that movie with its loving pastiches of classic detectives. Only Peter Sellars' Charlie Chan parody in yellowface hasn't aged well.
This might have been the first Maggie Smith film I saw.

Mine was either that or California Suite.

His family is reporting that Kris Kristofferson has passed at age 88.
R.I.P. Kris Kristofferson. One of the great songwriters. In the early 70s everyone, and I mean absolutely everyone, was cutting his songs.
I’m so happy I got to see him performing with Merle Haggard with my middle son.

He reminds me of Isaac Hayes--talented singer and actor, and also did lots of behind-the-scenes work for others.
Also, for Days of Our Lives fans, R.I.P. to Drake Hogestyn (70), who played the mysterious John Black in 4000 episodes over 40 years.

He was a helluva songwriter, a decent actor, and an all-round cool dude. "Me and Bobby McGee" was one of the first half dozen songs I learned to play on guitar as a 15-year-old. On a purely nostalgic note, I also love watching him in the lead in Covoy opposite Ali MacGraw.

Sad news about Kristofferson. Also seeing the news that actor John Ashton has passed at the age of 76. He is perhaps best known for his role as Sgt. Taggert in the Beverly Hills Cop movies. However, he'd appeared in many TV shows and movies over the years. I also liked him as a not-too-bright bounty hunter and rival to Robert De Niro's character in Midnight Run.

NBA Hall of Fame center Dikembe Mutombo has died of brain cancer at the age of 58. Not a big basketball fan, but he was a defensive giant.
