Also see that singer, comedian and all-around entertainer Steve Lawrence has died at the age of 88 - he had been suffering from Alzheimer's... He had a long career which began as a singer in the 1950s, and was long best known as half of the "Steve & Eydie" singing duo (the other half being his wife Eydie Gorme, who died in 2013). For people of a slightly younger vintage like me, he's perhaps most recognizable based on his many guest appearances in TV shows (mainly sitcoms) and movies, most notably (to me, anyway) a small role in The Blues Brothers.

Wow, double-whammy of sad news this morning; first up, it's been reported that acclaimed manga artist Akira Toriyama has died at what I think is the much-too-young age of 68... He is by far best known for creating the manga series Dragon Ball, which spawned an entire media franchise (i.e., anime series, etc.) - such is its popularity that even though I've never read any of the comics or watched any of the animated features, I'm still vaguely familiar with the name and basic appearance of the characters. I was pretty upset to hear this (especially on Facebook no less). While I didn't much care for Dragonball beyond the pre-Z era, so much of Toriyama's output was amazing and incredible. I remember reading a copy of monthly Shonen Jump that had a preview of Doctor Slump in it and being absolutely amazed by it. I promptly went with my grandfather to Books-A-Million and pre-ordered it. It was such a great read seamlessly blending comedic whimsy and science fiction like I hadn't seen before

And the Carol Burnett Show, in a hilarious send-up of Double Indemnity.

I once saw Steve Lawrence sing a version of Just the Way You Are that I liked better than the Billy Joel original. Probably on the Carol Burnett Show, since that's where I saw him most often, but I can't remember for sure.

RIP to ttrpg designer Jim Ward (Drawmij for those who played old school D&D). He was to co-designer of the Gods, Demigods & Heroes supplement of the original D&D game, co-writer of the original Deities & Demigods, creator of the Metamorphosis Alpha sci-fi rpg, and designer of the Dragonball Z ccg among other accomplishments in the gaming field.

I remember watching the Apollo-Soyuz mission, which was like a last hurrah, for NASA, until the finally got the Space Shuttle launched (well after James Bond launched 5 of them). Golden Grahams or another cereal had a commercial where the two spacecraft dock and the American astronauts share the cereal with the Russians.
The mission was Deke Slayton's only journey into space, after years of sitting on the bench, after he was disqualified from a Mercury flight, because of a heart condition. It was also a return to space for Alexei Leonov, after several canceled projects, including the Soviet Lunar Mission (aided by the fact that he was out of favor, politically, for a time).
That leaves Vance Brand as the sole remaining crew member still living. Of the Apollo Program, those still living are:
Jim Lovell (95)-Apollo 8 and 13 (and Gemini 7 & 12) Buzz Aldrin (94)-Apollo 11 (and Gemini 12) Vance Brand (92)-Apollo-Soyuz, 3 Space Shuttle missions Dave Scott (91)-Apollo 9 & 15 (and Gemini 8) William Anders (90)-Apollo 8 Fred Haise (90)-Apollo 13 (and the Shuttle Enterprise Landing Tests) Rusty Schweikart (88)-Apollo 9 Charles Duke 88)-Apollo 16 Harrison Schmitt (88)-Apollo 17
So, that's 9 Apollo Program astronauts (including Apollo-Soyuz) and 3 Gemini astronauts

And Loren Visser, in Blood Simple. Also turns up in a memorable cameo, in Raising Arizona, for the Cohens. He's also a rather portly Marine, in Escape From the Planet of the Apes, as well as a rather under-stated turn, as a sportswriter, in Slap Shot. His credits make for a snapshot of the highs and lows of Hollywood, as he is in a bunch of modern classics and tremendous works of art, then a lot of cheesy schlock, like Missing In Action. regardless of the quality of the film, though, he was always good.
