I've seen it reported on Facebook, by his son, that Ian Gibson has passed away. One of the mainstays of 2000 AD, I know Gibson best for his work with Alan Moore on The Ballad of Halo Jones. Gibson had been battling cancer and reportedly went in to hospice a few days ago. Yeah, very sad. Gibson's instantly recognisable art style is very much associated in my mind with childhood reading of 2000 AD. I loved his work on Robo-Hunter, Judge Dredd and Ace Trucking Co. As a kid, The Ballad of Halo Jones was not a favourite and something I only got into semi-recently; it was probably a bit too "intellectual" for me at the time and I tended to think that it was boring. In actual fact, turns out it's rather superb.

Oh, man. Just saw the news that actor Andre Braugher has died. I think he's most recently best known for his role in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but he has appeared in a number of TV series and movies. I first took notice of him in the 1990s police procedural Homicide: Life on the Street. He was a damn good actor, equally adept at drama and (dead-pan) comedy. And 61 is way too young to go.

My younger daughter and I have been watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine together recently, and this is just heartbreaking. She literally came downstairs after seeing the news on social media (Terry Crews had posted something) and she was sobbing.
61 is just too damn young. RIP Captain Raymond Holt.

I saw an announcement on NPR's website; but the name didn't immediately click and the photo they had on the article wasn't the best (from some media appearance, not from tv or movies). Great actor and since that is only 4 years older than me....Waaaayy too young.

Andre Braugher was just an amazingly versatile actor. Able to seamlessly go from drama to dead-pan comedy. He was the lynchpin that made Brooklyn 99 one of the few sitcoms I have liked in recent years.
And as a guy who is pushing 61 fairly hard...that is far too young.

This news may interest any wine enthusiasts we have on the board: just saw that California wine-maker Miljenko 'Mike' Grgich has died at the age of 100. Apparently he was one of the guys responsible for putting the Napa Valley on the global wine map, picking up a number of awards and honors for his various vintages. His wines were even served at state dinners in the White House. The only reason I know about him is because he's Croatian, so he was a point of pride in Croatian emigre communities in the US (esp. in California, naturally).

Colin Burgess, the original drummer with AC/DC (and who had been the drummer with the Master's Apprentices before that) has died at the age of 77.

Singer Essra Mohawk, who, in addition to recording her own albums, worked with Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia and others, passed away at 75 on December 11. She's seemingly best known for songs covered by other artists ("Change of Heart" by Cyndi Lauper and "Stronger Than the Wind" by Tina Turner), as well as, to Saturday morning viewers of a certain age, the voice of "Interjections" and "Sufferin' Til Suffrage" on Schoolhouse Rock.

Yeah, I saw that. Slightly edited though. When the kid gets a shot, the lyric is "Yow!! That's not fair, giving a guy a shot down there!" The "down there" part has been removed.

"Sufferin' Til Suffrage" reminds me of something Mel Brooks said about Frankie Laine singing the opening theme for Blazing Saddles: that it didn't seem like Frankie knew that this was just a comedy film, but after that performance, Mel didn't have the heart to tell him. In the same way, Mohawk and the backing singers seem unaware that they're only doing a three-minute educational cartoon to be dropped into Saturday morning TV and then probably never seen again, and they really go for it.
Come to think of it, I've had the same thought about Elmer Bernstein's orchestral score for the Heavy Metal movie as well.
