Radio jounalist and long-time host of NPR's Talk of the Nation, Neal Conan has passed away at age 71. No no no no no. Talk of the Nation was always my favorite thing about NPR, and I pretty much * stopped being a supporting member after it was cancelled. Neal Conan contributed a lot more to NPR than just Talk of the Nation, but it's certainly how I knew him best. In the back of my mind, I've always hoped against hope that NPR would resurrect the show and invite him back. Ah well. Rest in Peace, Good Sir, and thank you. *I still give infrequently, but Neal was damn well worth a dollar a day before that (4 days a week)

R. I. P. singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith. A great songwriter who was an excellent duet partner. Damn.
I had met Nanci years ago through John Prine and his wife Fiona. She would occasionally accompany them when they would come to see one of my bands (The Secret Commonwealth) perform at the old Sherlock Holmes Pub in Nashville. I wasn't more than an acquaintance with Nanci, but I was well aware of her talent and career. A special songwriter for sure, with a fantastic voice.
The choir of the Heavenly Host just took it up a notch in the talent department. Rest in peace, Nanci.
Now I gotta dig out "Other Voices, Other Rooms" and pour a tall scotch...

Sad to hear about Nanci Griffith's passing. I'm not what anyone would call a fan of hers, but I do enjoy hearing her on the Sunday morning folk music show on our local listener-supported radio station. I'm betting tomorrow is going to be dedicated to her music, as that is what they did when John Prine passed recently.

Just heard about actor Alex Cord passing away. Likely most remember him for those Gene Roddenberry movie Earth II on television or on his role in Airwolf as Archangel. Always liked seeing Cord pop up on television shows and he did quite a few western movies in his younger days. Such a memorable voice and look that you might forget his name but instantly remember having seen or heard him before. Rest in peace and know many enjoyed your career.

Loved him in Airwolf, as Michael Coldsmith Briggs III, aka Archangel. Loved the look of the character, with the white suit and eyepatch (which immediately conjured up Nick Fury).

Apologies if this was posted already. Jerry Granelli of the trio that is famous for the Linus and Lucy song for the Christmas special died July 20 of this year at age 80. He was the last surviving person of the original trio.

British comedian Sean Lock has passed away much too early at 58.

I only know Lock from 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and found him absolutely hilarious. Sad news, and yes, too young. F***ing cancer strikes yet again.

First saw Sean on QI, then some stand-up and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Remember seeing some show he hosted, where he had some wannabe punk musicians, acting like a-holes to get attention (probably to make up for a lack of musical talent) and he was just eviscerating them as idiots.

R. I. P. Sonny Chiba. Chiba was an impressive presence in martial arts films for forty plus years. From Karate Kiba to Street Fighter to Kill Bill, Chiba was the real deal.

Dang it. Another great one gone. Chiba was always part of my movie watching while growing up and have many of his movies on DVD. Always thought of Chiba as the John Wayne of Japan, always elevated the movie he was in, no matter the genre and that he essentially was just being himself up on the screen.
