Aw man... Toots is gone? They were playing Pressure Drop on some tv news show I caught the tail end of and I should've wondered about it more. I just thought someone was using some cool music for their outro like they sometimes do. So many classic recordings... Never Grow Old, Bam Bam, Sweet And Dandy, Reggae Got Soul, 54-46, Monkey Man... "complications of covid-19" Supposedly he an Ziggy MArley had recently recorded some new tracks (or covers) together for a new album by Toots that either drops soon or just recently dropped, so we will get one more helping of his stuff at least. -M

Suicide is viewed differently, in Asian cultures, especially Japan. It can be seen as a way of "saving face," with a scandal, a failure, or something along similar lines. It is something that the societies grapple with, as there is a long tradition; but, modern values and outside perspectives are at odds with that. Given that both are in the performing arts, a field that is filled with emotional turmoil within performers, I suspect there is a long history behind both. Still, 36 is a child, these days.

Winston Groom, most famous as the author of Forrest Gump, has died at the age of 77. The book is quite a bit different from the movie and Forrest is a bit more complex and not always likable. He even gets involved in pro wrestling, at one point. He wrote a sequel, after the movie; but, it wasn't as well received. People soon forgot about the original, after the theatrical run and the Oscars. Groom served in the Fourth Infantry Division, during a tour of Vietnam. Write what you know. After Vietnam, he worked as a journalist for the Washington Star, but left it to write novels. His first, Better Times Than These, was published in 1978 and deals with a rifle company in Vietnam, whose illusions are shattered. His book, Conversations with the Enemy, about PFC Robert Garwood, who escaped a POW camp and hopped a flight back to the US and was arrested 14 years later for desertion, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-fiction. Forrest Gump was published in 1986 He wrote several military histories and general histories, with subjects like World War 1 and the Western Front, the events of 1942, a volume on aviators Eddie Rickenbacker, Charles Lindbergh and James Doolittle and a recent volume of Generals Eisenhower, MacArthur and Marshall and their dynamics during the war. Groom famously had to sue Paramount over their crooked accounting, when they claimed there were no net profits to the film, despite earning $683 million at the box office and Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis each getting $40 million, from the gross profits. Paramount eventually paid him a seven figure option for Gump and Co, then never made the movie, despite being in development for over 12 years.

I was kind of expecting Bader-Ginsburg's passing, before the year's end, based on her health over the past year. Get ready for the s@#$-storm, though nothing is likely to happen until after the election and (probably) the Nerw Year.
She was a passionate advocate for upholding the law to protect the rights of those in the minority and without political power and the kind of voice you need to have in the highest courts, to ensure that the law is applied equally to all citizens.
She did much in service to the people of this country; pay her back by doing your civic duty in November. The law is only as good as the people who craft it , interpret it and defend it and we have the power to decide who they are.

2020, unsure whether it has sucked enough, continues to overachieve.
November 3 looking more like the edge of a cliff than ever.

though nothing is likely to happen until after the election and (probably) the New Year. No, they're moving ahead to put in a replacement. The current president got cheers earlier tonight when touting Ted Cruz as his supreme court pick so I'd be surprised if that isn't who they will be voting on. By not stepping aside for a younger person without the serious health issues when she was asked several years ago, R B-G may've practically erased her career accomplishments as it would now be a 6 - 3 court (and right now is 5 - 3 with one seat vacant). I wish the news was different, although the Senator from Alaska has said she would not vote before an election, so there's one possible dissenter. That's all the info I have. Er, it is what it is?

Remains to be seen. It is not that easy to railroad something through the Senate, even with a majority. There may be enough fear there there to want to hold off until the election is over.

Both Gale Sayers and Road Warrior Animal passed.
Sayers may have gone down as the greatest RB in history had he stayed healthy.
And I grew up loving the Road Warriors. Easily my favorite tag team. And now they’re both gone...

Sayers, apart from his NFL career, was also known for his friendship with Brian Piccolo, who passed away of testicluar cancer. Sayers wrote the memoir Brian's Song, which then inspired the tv movie, with James Caan and Billy Dee Williams.
