Pasko has the distinction of being the only pro I ever got into a flame war with on CBR. Please do tell!

Pasko has the distinction of being the only pro I ever got into a flame war with on CBR. Please do tell! I only kind of remember it and as flame wars go it wasn't huge. But it definitely revolved around copyright length and, as I recall, Pasko was very much in favor of extending copyright almost to the point of a perpetual copyright. And was highly offended that anyone who wasn't a professional writer could have an opinion on the issue.

I remember Martin Pasko appearing as a character in a Phantom Stranger story (along with Gerry Conway). The only other thing I remember about him is that one long multi-person interview in a Comics Journal and how it seemed he didn't like writing comics or cartoons much at all really. Perhaps this is why I disliked his Plastic Man so much?

Paul Kupperberg is reporting on Twitter that Marty Pasko has passed away. If true, and I have to think that Kupperberg would be someone who would know, Pasko was 65, which is seeming pretty young at this point. (...) Tony Isabella also reported this on his fb page, but without providing any details or stating where he got the information. If true, though, sad news - and yeah, a little too young in my opinion.

Jerry Stiller is dead at 92. He'll always be Murry Ballstein to me.

Perhaps this is why I disliked his Plastic Man so much? I am always saddened to hear of a comics professional passing. I quite enjoyed his run on Blackhawk. It is a shame that he may end up being best remembered as the writer who proceeded Alan Moore on Swamp Thing.
Was Pasko one of the creators who used to appear as a cameo in the Rutland Halloween Parade stories that appeared in various books in the 70s and 80s? I know they appeared in Justice League and Batman, and there were some Marvel appearances as well. (Your comment about him appearing in Phantom Stranger made me think of this.)

The Phantom Stranger scene had something to do with that. It was in one of the Deadman crossover issues. I didn't know about the other appearances, I guess they got amusement where they could find it.

I don't recall Pasko in the Rutland things, unless it was one of the ones I missed. Roy Thomas, yeah, Denny O'Neil, Len Wein, Alan Weiss, Gerry Conway, Steve Englehart, Bernie Wrightson; maybe some others.

^^No, Pasko wasn’t in any of those, but he makes a brief appearance along with Gerry Conway and Paul Kupperberg and a couple of other pros in the Deadman-Phantom Stranger team-up that he wrote and set in Rutland.
As a fan, he was known as Pesky Pasko in the Schwartz letter columns.
And, yes, his run on Swamp Thing has been unfairly forgotten.

Yeah, I remember enjoying his Swamp Thing series with Thomas Yeates on the artwork. I think that's the only thing of his I've read.
What was his rationale on the copyright duration - he wanted his descendants to enjoy the profits from his work or something like that? Seems an odd stance from a comics perspective, where the most profitable rights are often held by big companies, not the creators.

I best remember Pasko as writing some stuff from the late '70s/early '80s that I really enjoyed, like a few issues of the revived Metal Men, the Plastic Man stories from Adventure (art by Joe Staton), the Dr. Fate origin from First Issue Special and then the Dr. Fate back-ups in Flash. When people were posting their favorite Pasko stories on Back Issue's fb page yesterday, I remembered he also wrote the fun first two issues of DC Comics Presents, the Superman and Flash team-up.

Yep. It was essentially "I worked hard on this nobody should ever get it without paying. And after I'm dead my people deserve money." I pointed out that the vast majority of the popular culture of the 20th Century is held by a handful corporations (far less now) but that didn't get any traction.
