It's Bleeding Cool, so grain of salt and all that, but reports of changes at DC because of fiscal problems are beginning to surface... Austerity Regime at DCcancellations, price increases, lower page rates to creators, more ads, more licensed specialty comics, and it looks like Didio is back in charge of it all again. Hooha, yeah...not. -M DC Implosion part 2 ? Pretty much. Maybe worse this time?

Pretty much. Maybe worse this time? It can't be worse, since I'll see it coming this time. Assuming the bean counters don't pull the plug entirely....

Pretty much. Maybe worse this time? "Surely if we have less pages for more $, people will flock to our books!" *sigh*

Pretty much. Maybe worse this time? "Surely if we have less pages for more $, people will flock to our books!" *sigh* 25 (ish) comics with 17 pages of editorially driven story featuring the art of the best Brazilian shop we can afford, for the low low price of $4.99.

Honestly, though, maybe this will be a good thing. Maybe it's the wake-up call DC needs that massively hyped, editorially restricted mega events and restructurings are not what comic readers want anymore. Maybe we'll see titles that will function independently and will be independently controlled because, after all, DC will be indiscriminately axing titles left and right -- they really can't interconnect right now.

Maybe we'll see titles that will function independently and will be independently controlled because, after all, DC will be indiscriminately axing titles left and right -- they really can't interconnect right now. Unfortunately I think it will be the opposite effect. When sales go down often the result is being more conservative, not more experimental. They will look at what their top sellers mostly consist of-the Batbooks, Justice League and events like Forever Evil, plus the general success of the weekly comics, and pour their efforts into more stuff like that that does sell well for them currently. More tightly focused big event driven season long stories and drop the periphery stuff that clogs up the lower echelons of the Diamond charts. Weekly titles with teams of creators executing a single story vision determined by a lead writer or writer (s) which is more of less editorial, so I would look for more stuff like Batman Eternal, Future's End and the other weekly leading readers into a big climax mini with the monthlies being the top of the chart big guns. Everything else, not so much. They will look to separate the wheat form the chafe, and unfortunately most of the wheat they currently produce is the big blockbuster type stuff and Batman. Harley Quinn being the outlier there. You say comic readers don't want editorial constructed mega event comics, but if you look at the Diamond sales charts, a different story is being told for mainstram super-hero comics. That is what is selling for mainstream cape stuff. -M

I remember in Jim Shooters blog, a few years ago, he said that DC was exploring the possibility of Marvel Taking over their books because of poor sales in the late 70's. Time for DC to call the Marvel EIC.

I'm more interested in seeing where DC is after DK3 starts and the collections of Sandman: Overture and (to a lesser extent) Multiversity drop. S:O has been mostly forgotten as individual issues because of the delays, but it will be DC's biggest selling collection in years considering its appeal to readers who don't normally read comics. I don't think it will single-handedly reverse that $2,000,000 revenue shortfall, but I wouldn't be surprised if it halves it. (Of course, this is presuming it will be released in late October as planned.)

First new book DC announces after the financial news-a second Harley Quinn ongoing. Looks like they will focus on more books with the cash cows and flavors of the month to try to overcome the shortfall.

It would be unthinkable to see Batman, Wonder Woman, JLA, and other properties of DC Comics in the hands of Marvel Comics and they would be a monopoly like you never seen before. It happen before when WWE brought out WCW and WCW was cease to exist. It will be a sad day for all readers like.

I think it will be really interesting to see how Sandman:Overture sells. I personally skipped the singles due to the cover price, and as others said.. the delays really killed the momentum. OTOH, just Neil Gaiman's name should get it alot of sales once it hits book stores.

Marvel and DC have been flooding the market with titles that are all the same stuff. DC's reprint lines are a mess. I think it might be better if they licensed out some of their back list to Dark Horse or some one else to handle them, as they often seem slip shod in how some of their stuff comes out.

I would love to see a classic Justice Society of America book from Dynamite.
