I've had too much going on to post the last few requests Roy has made, but life is getting better so here's what Roy posted today:
Could use better scans (not reproduced from my bound volumes, in other words) of the following for ALTER EGO #148, which deals with the 2000 All Time Classic con in White Plains, NY:
Page from Flash story in COMIC CAVALCADE #10 that has 3 panels of the Three Dimwits, plus a big panel of the Flash slugging a trio of crooks
Last page of Flash story in COMIC CAVALCADE #24
Flash splashes from COMIC CAVALCADE #24 & #28
Atom splash panel from ALL-STAR COMICS #34
Cotton-Top Katie splash panel from ALL-STAR COMICS #34
Green Lantern splash page from COMIC CAVALCADE #19
Green Lantern splash page from COMIC CAVALCADE #28
Naturally, a copy of AE #148 will go out this August to all persons who send me pages from the above list that are used in the issue, so it's first-come-first-served, but I appreciate your consideration in any event.

And another request from Roy:
At the last minute, I've gotten permission (from his daughter) to serialize John Broome's memoir MY LIFE IN LITTLE PIECES in ALTER EGO, starting in #149 (mostly a Gil Kane issue--fitting, since of course they began the Silver Age GREEN LANTERN together). Actually, he mentions relatively little about his SF and comics work, but we'll naturally be using that kind of art (and other that might be suggested) to illustrate his story, along with photos supplied by his daughter and others. I could really use any of the following that you might have access to... for #149 and for the issues that will follow:
Covers of issues of pulp magazines (I'm not sure which ones--probably PLANET, among others) in which Broome's prose work appeared after WWII (agented by Julie Schwartz)... or, perhaps even better, the illustrations that accompanied his stories!
Comics stories from STRANGE ADVENTURES, MYSTERY IN SPACE, and key splashes or pages from FLASH or GREEN LANTERN, either Silver or Golden Age...
Other DC work by Broome, including lesser features in FLASH COMICS, ALL-AMERICAN, etc.
Work by Broome done for other comics companies.
And, in particular-- photos and work by comics writer DAVID VERN REED, who wrote Batman, et al., through the 1960s... esp. revamp of Batplane in BATMAN #61 and intro of Deadshot in BATMAN #59, according to wikipedia. Have never seen a photo of Reed... and it would really be helpful. (He and Julie Schwartz, alas, are about the only comics people mentioned in the memoir. At least we have a number of pics of the two of them together circa 1946, together with their (future) wives.
Someone else provided this:
the list of John Broome's fiction (taken from philsp.com) - to help those looking for these. (email from Steven Rowe)

Today's missive from The Rascally One:
Trying to put together Gil Kane interviews and articles for ALTER EGO #149 in the next couple of weeks tops. I have a lot of the mainstream stuff, but there are some particularly needs... both of Gil's own work and of some of the "history of comics" items and artists he wrote about in a 1974 article for the HARVARD PICTORIAL FICTION magazine.
One thing I could really use--and did run in b&w in the trade paperback collection ALTER EGO: THE COMIC BOOK ARTIST COLLECTION (out of print) was an action page of Newsboy Legion and the Guardian from STAR SPANGLED COMICS #35 (Aug. 1944)--I think it might be "page 10" (hard to read the precise number). Any MLJ work would be welcome, too.
I'll be back, as other needs become apparent.
Thanks for listening,
Roy

Any Ivy Leaguers here?
re: HARVARD JOURNAL OF PICTORIAL FICTION April 1974 - Gil Kane article
I've discovered that the version of the text of the above article by Gil Kane that I've been using as I prepare ALTER EGO #149 has some serious flaws in it... but I don't have access to an actual copy of the magazine. Does anyone out there have an actual copy that could be loaned to quickly and briefly... or perhaps scans of the pages could be sent?
I've discovered, for instance, that in addition to a mistake at the beginning of the text as to where the editor's intro leaves off and Gil's actual article begins, there is a severe screw-up of some kind in a paragraph, just a page or two into the article, that begins: "What is each narrative art form best suited to?" I suspect that that sentence may have been an editorial addition intended (but not used) as a bold-lettered heading... but more important is the second sentence in that paragraph, which reads:
From the pivotal statement, "A hero can be far more heroic in comics than as played by a real person, "the author moves to a theory that all forms of fiction draw images and motifs from the same source.
This sentence makes no sense, because "the author" intended, I could tell at once, must be Gil Kane--who is being talked about there, and certainly doesn't refer to himself as "the author" and describe what he does in an article that we are right in the middle of! And sure enough, just 3 sentences later, this sentence appears:
A hero can be far more heroic, or handsome, or spectacular in comics than as played by a real person.
Something really got messed up here, and I'd like the text of the article to be as good as it can be in AE #147. Anybody have any ideas? If I have a copy of that issue anywhere, I sure haven't been able to lay my hands on it.
Thanks for listening,
Roy

A new request:
I always hate to throw something out like this, because several of you generous souls will respond... yet I can only send a copy of the related issue of ALTER EGO to the first person who sends a usable scan. I need the splash page of the story "Battle Flag of the Foreign Legion" from DC's DANGER TRAIL #3.
Thanks for listening,
Roy

This just in:
Won't be at phone or PC for a couple of days, but really need the splash of a Wally Wood war story done for DC in 50s... think there was just one or so. Please send to Chris Day at chris@chrisdaydesign.com, and he'll use the first copy that arrives. I just need to find out the comic, issue, and date... I'll do my best to give a copy of AE #149 to first provider(s).
If anyone wants to send them to me, please do so right now ONLY between 3:00 and 7:30 Eastern time... whatever that is in your time zone, if different. Technical...
Thanks for listening,
Roy

Followup to the last request, and a new one:
Thanks to Sharon Karibian of the list, I've discovered that Wally Wood drew three 1956 war stories for DC. I have room for only use one good splash in ALTER EGO #149, and I'm loath to waste anyone's time since I have only one comp issue to give out (not counting Sharon). If someone has one of these splashes, I'm hoping that person can e-mail it to me--but only between the hours (Eastern time) of 3:00 AM to 7:30 AM. Otherwise, heavy digital traffic can cause me severe problems with my satellite server, which would negate any good. Anyway, the three Wood-drawn stories are:
ALL-AMERICAN MEN OF WAR #29 (Jan. 1956) - "Battle Bridges"
ALL-AMERICAN MEN OF WAR #30 (Feb. 1956) - "Flying Camera"
OUR FIGHTING FORCES #10 (April-May 1956) - "Three Doors to War"
Thanks for listening, and sorry that lack of broadband is making me so difficult to help just now. I'm hoping for better.
One last item for AE #149, and then I'll stop bothering you, I hope.
In the late 1950s, I think, there was at least one issue of a HENNESSEY comic book published by Dell (perhaps in its FOUR COLOR series?) drawn by Gil Kane. I need the splash page of that issue, along with issues # and dates. Once again, due to potential problems with my server at this time, I'm hoping that in this case the page can be sent NOT to me, but to AE layout man Chris Day at chris@chrisdaydesign.com, and he will inform me which person sent the page first and thus who is owed a copy of ALTER EGO #149. But to all others, thanks... wish I could give you all copies, but my publisher has nixed that arrangement.
Thanks,
Roy

Here's one that I'll bet a few people here have:
Wondering if anyone has a good scan, from the original comic, of the lead Hawkman splash from BRAVE AND THE BOLD #43. Alas, can only give out a copy of ALTER EGO #149 to the first person who send me a 300 dpi scan... but I don't have any way to fine-tune this request, I'm afraid.
Thanks for listening,
Roy

Did anyone here ever communicate with Flo Steinberg? Here's Roy:
I've decided that I'm going to delay the second issue of ALTER EGO devoted to the 2000 All Time Classic New York Comic Book Convention (the first, in AE #148, is due out any day) and devoted issue #153 instead to my late friend and colleague Flo Steinberg. I'd be interested in first-hand reminiscences of Flo (that might well include encounters via mail back in the day) for a special section of the issue... but I'm always looking hard for a drawing of Flo that I can use on the cover of the issue. I thought perhaps some good artist has done one that I might be able to use, and I'm simply unaware of it. Any help out there?

Roy would like to watch a couple of Marvel TV shows, and he has an update on upcoming issues of AE:
Seeing Marvel announce not just "The Defenders" now coming out but even a second season of "Iron Fist," I was reminded that, since I'm not on broadband out here in the Styx, I haven't even seen the first season of "Iron Fist." I don't suppose there's anyone out there who's scored a copy of that (or "The Defenders," of course) and could arrange to send me DVDs of it? I could try to make it worth someone's while, if they'd contact me off-list.
Thought I'd mention that, because of the untimely passing of my friend and longtime colleague Flo Steinberg (ANY passing would have been "untimely"), and since she and I never did quite get around to the "final interview" she was going to do for AE, I've decided that ALTER EGO #153, out next June, will cover-feature her and will contain, along with a couple of rare interviews, tributes to her by various pros and fans... and more are solicited, if you know someone who has any. The rest of that issue will probably be filled out, coincidentally, by an interview with her late-60s replacement at Marvel, Robin Green, who went on to write a major piece for ROLLING STONE about Marvel a year or two later (it'll be reprinted in the AE issue) and eventually became an Emmy-winning writer on "The Sopranos."
The very next issue, #154, will cover-feature a new interview by Dr. Michael J. Vassallo with Timely/Marvel Golden Ager Allen Bellman, and also, in all probability, the coverage of the Marvel heroine titles of 45 years ago, THE CAT, SHANNA THE SHE-DEVIL, and NIGHT NURSE, with interviews with writers Linda Fite and Carol Seuling, artist Paty Cockrum, and with me on NIGHT NURSE since my former wife Jean has decided against giving one. (#155 will feature Daredevil/Crimebuster/CRIME DOES NOT PAY/Three Stooges artist Norman Maurer... and #156 will be an FCA/Fawcett issue with Don Newton and other Fawcett and Captain Marvel-related topics... with #151 starring Frank Thomas (the Owl, the Eye, etc.) by Michael T. Gilbert...and #152 focusing on fan/pro artist Larry Ivie, covered by friend and artist Sandy Plunkett... both, I think, will be real eye-openers as to why Thomas and Ivie deserve our attention.
By the way, the second issue featuring panels and pictures from the 2000 All Time Classic New York Comic Book Convention (the first is #148, just now coming out) has thus had to be pushed back from #153 to #157, in February of 2019. For a guy who never liked to think about THE AVENGERS two issues ahead, I sure have to do a lot of planning in advance for ALTER EGO!

This just in:
Does anyone have one good daily and/or one Sunday from the SPIDER-MAN strip of 1988? Could use it for AE #150.
HOWEVER--please don't send it without contacting me first! As many of you know, I don't have broadband, and I get penalized severely by my satellite server (like, slowing down of Internet for days, etc.) if I go over a certain amount of digital info sent AND/OR received during a given period... and I'm perilously close to that situation right now.
One can send any amount of data to me if it's done between 3:00 AM and 7:00 AM Eastern time... but only then, right now, please!
Thanks for listening,
Roy

Anybody with unslabbed early Marvels?
I know these are rare items, and I am looking for scans shot from the original comics, not from reprints... but I could sure use the lead splash pages from the following 1962 Marvel comics: Thor in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83 Ant-Man in TALES TO ASTONISH #35 INCREDIBLE HULK #3
Might be best to contact me before sending them; I don't want anyone to risk manhandling such valuable comics (even though there were printed on paper that was the next thing to old rags) and then find out someone else has already sent me that page.
Thanks for listening, Roy

Today's Rascally Request:
Looking for a bit of help, as usual. Does anyone have a scan of good interior art from the 1964 BUCK ROGERS Gold Key one-shot drawn by Ray Bailey?

And another:
Combination of factors (including eye problems) put me behind on this issue... and now I belatedly realize, as I should have earlier, that the public domain sites I was counting on don't have Gold Key or even later Dell material. I can give copies of AE #151 to the first person who sends the pages I use from these... I don't need covers (they're easily available from the GCD), but could use good representative action or dramatic pages, no more than 1 or 2 from each, please, of:
Dell:
Dracula (the 3 super-heroes for these first 3, not the movie adaptations) Frankenstein
The Werewolf
Mandrake the Magician (1956 one-shot) Superheroes (1967) Gold Key:
Doc Savage (1966 one-shot)
Jungle Twins
Neutro (one-shot, 1967)
Nukla
Tiger Girl
Tragg and the Sky Gods
