So I saw this at my lcs on FCBD but was on the fence, but when I got home, I regretted not picking it up. When I went today to pick up my pulls, it was still there, so I grabbed it. It's copyrighted 1978 to DC Comics, has a Pepsi logo and Pepsi trademark notices on it. The cover is from one of the Treasury editions, but I a trying to figure out where it came from. My best guess is a fast food chain or restaurant rather than retail because of the Pepsi logo and info, but does anyone have any idea which chain it might have been or if not a restaurant, where it might have come from? It appears that in 1978, Pepsi licensed several DC characters for promotional giveaways, for placemats, as well as drinking glasses. I've found some eBay and Etsy listings for the Shazam one, and another for a Superman one, that says the series included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Shazam and Aquaman. The Superman one features the Kryptonite No More cover, with a Curt Swan-drawn origin story. That Shazam one looks like Kurt Schaffenberger , to me. There was also a Pepsi-produced Shazam glass, which was part of a similar series. I have seen one in an antique store. I have seen reference to one as a Burger King giveaway, which sounds about right. Here's the info on the Superman placemat.There also seems to be a Flash one, as I found an image from Worthpoint. Pepsi also had a series of glasses for the Superman movie, of that year. I think they did the Looney tunes promotion, at either Hardees or Burger King, around the similar time frame, in the 70s, as I had a Speedy Gonzales glass that I got, as a premium, when we ate there, once. Or, at least, it was the same glass company supplying them to the franchises and Pepsi. |

Google-Fu is strong, tonight. It appears that in 1978, Pepsi licensed several DC characters for promotional giveaways, for placemats, as well as drinking glasses. I've found some eBay and Etsy listings for the Shazam one, and another for a Superman one, that says the series included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Shazam and Aquaman. The Superman one features the Kryptonite No More cover, with a Curt Swan-drawn origin story. That Shazam one looks like Kurt Schaffenberger , to me. There was also a Pepsi-produced Shazam glass, which was part of a similar series. I have seen one in an antique store. My first guess would be Pizza Hut. They were the only sit-down restaurant owned by PepsiCo back then, and served Pepsi products exclusively.
Also, Pizza Hut was responsible for these "Collectors' Editions" back in 1977 (the year they were purchased by PepsiCo). This would indicate that Pizza Hut already had an established license agreement with DC. Some sort of agreement for the place-mats in 1978 (and possibly drinking glasses as well) would not be a big lift for them--

Does anyone else remember the Marvel Super-Heroes Slurpee cups that 7-11 was offering back circa '75 or so? There were 60(!) of them in all, of which I managed to snag six (Captain America, Doc Savage, Hercules, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thing). I might've gotten more but I wasn't a big Slurpee fan. Unfortunately, it only took two or three washings for the pics to wear off so I chucked 'em all decades ago.

Does anyone else remember the Marvel Super-Heroes Slurpee cups that 7-11 was offering back circa '75 or so? There were 60(!) of them in all, of which I managed to snag six (Captain America, Doc Savage, Hercules, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thing). I might've gotten more but I wasn't a big Slurpee fan. Unfortunately, it only took two or three washings for the pics to wear off so I chucked 'em all decades ago. Cei-U! I summon the summer I graduated from high school! I have one, Clea, that I picked up at a flea market about 10-15 years ago for like $4. Never got them as a kid, but I do remember them. This is the one I have seen in an old pic of an old display (since changed) of Dr. Strange related stuff.  -M |

Thanks, Cei-U! and codystarbuck . I agree that it looks like an attempt to draw a panther and that it resembles Golden's style, but there are so many artists who draw like this today whom I just don't know... |

Regarding the placements, I've found there were sets of Disney and Looney Tunes placemats similar to these also from Pepsi Co in '78. These only had art on 1 side though, the back was a red and white gingham check style pattern (similar to a tablecloth pattern you might see at an Italian restaurant of the period).

looks like recent ebay sales would indicate 10-15 each, with some lots that were a lost less (under 5 bucks per) There seems to be a 2nd set in 1977 that had more backgrounds and not just the character on a white cup

So a couple of updates on the placemat source search. I've had one person contact me to tell me they got the Looney Tunes mats at Burger Chef, and another contact me to tell me they got an Uncle Scrooge mat at Pizza Hit in the late 70s. Haven't gotten any info on the DC mats though.
