Been power-reading through the DC You revival of Doctor Fate, really interesting take on the character. The fact that it's penned by Paul Levitz doesn't hurt either

Read Volume 4 of Lazarus last night (issues 16-21), man the ending of 21 threw me for a loop. Jaw hitting floor blew me away type surprise that hasn't happened with a comic in a looong time. Good on you Mr. Rucka, I salute you man. Now I just got to wait 6 or so months for the next volume (grumble, grumble, grumble).

I just finished the new issue of Superman. This Vandal Savage story that they're doing is awful. It reads exactly like the kind of story a publisher puts out to tie up loose ends before moving on to a new creative team. Just bad, boring nonsense.

Just reread War and Penis The epitome of repetition comedy. It starts so bad but eventually becomes fascinating.

Catching up on ANAD Avengers and Invincible Iron Man.
After the big cosmic hoopla in Hickman's previous run, Waid is making this new volume quite enjoyable. Love his characterizations of the young ones.
For once, I find Bendis tolerable on IIM. The storyline has been engaging though sometimes Bendis goes overboard with Tony's conversations with his AI, Friday.

Just a couple quick comments from my February DCBS box before I go back to it:
Iron Man: If they could drop the Doom thing already, I could really be digging this book... as it is.. meh. Also, Tony's broke in Avengers, but still owns a skyscraper in Japan in this one? 'ninety Avengers teams' when he himself said there really isn't one? grr....
Dr. Strange: Bachalo is a great fit for the art, but the story is just too dark and depressing. I also hate what they're doing with how magic works and Strange's powers work... Hopefully it will be forgotten as fast as Superior Iron Man was.
Hercules: If this was an indy book, it would be a runaway hit. They're really no reason at all for it to be in the Marvel Universe, honestly.. it could be any universe, and it would work just fine. Sad that because it's got Marvel on the cover lots of people probably didn't give it a shot. GREAT story... I'm sad it's only getting 6 issues (not least because the ending is sure to be rushed)
Astro City: Man, Busiek is on fire lately! I liked Steeljack last time he was around, and he's even cooler this time.

Read the last Act of The Fade Out by Brubaker and Phillips last night (Act Three: issues 9-12). Damn that was a great noir story. Sean Phillips continues to amaze me. I wasn't that impressed with him when I first encountered his stuff on the covers to a few issues of Invisibles in the 90s, but he has grown into one of my favorite artists.
I look forward to seeing what the next Brubaker/Phillips collaboration is in their deal with Image.

I have to get that one of these days.
Read Wild's End: Enemy Within today (waited until the whole series was out)... wow.. who would have thought a mash up of Wind and the Willows and War of the Worlds would work? Very cool... the 1st mini (just Titled 'Wild's End') was a bit slow to start but, man, was this one great. Highly recommended.

SpongeBob issue #51. My kids love it. I get a kick out of reading it because it is about plain aloofness and fun.

I read Scarlet Witch #1. Not a bad take on her and her powers. I think I've seen the "Ghost as a friend " trope before but I guess Agatha is acting as a narrative tool for the book . The artwork had a nice moody Gene Colan feel to it but some of the faces were a little off. I rate it 3/5 and at 4 dollars a pop, I don't see myself getting it every month.

SpongeBob issue #51. My kids love it. I get a kick out of reading it because it is about plain aloofness and fun. It's kind of weird how the comic adaptations of both Spongebob and The Simpsons are more faithful to the initial spirit of the show then the cartoons themselves these days

I was just rereading Scott Snyder and Jock's Detecrive Comics from about six years ago. The tandem of Dick and Damian as the Dynamic Duo in Tec was refreshing. The coloring also added to the tone of the story. I didn't know about commissioner Gordon's psychotic son. But that was one eerie villain. Scarier than the other costumed villains.

Reading Aaron's God Of Thunder. The first arc was great, with Gorr the God Butcher. I thought the art was solid (although the look of Gorr and his people seemed little simplified, it was still good. Kind of like Gollum meets an Earthworm Jim type look). The writing was solid. Definitely one of the more entertaining Thor stories I have read.
The second arc uses Malekith. Pretty decent, although the artwork is not as good IMO. Esad Ribic did the first arc, and Garney does this arc. His artwork is just a bit cartoony for me. But it works because Thor and company visit the land of elves. It just seemed like it could have been done a little darker. After all, Malekith is the dark elf. This arc ended a bit odd and, as I am only on #19 of this run, I think there is more to be wrapped up here.
Issue #18 was strange but funny. Thor makes friends with a drunk dragon that can talk. I found it quite humourous and over enjoyable for a filler issue. Ribic is back too, making the art enjoyable again. Here is hoping that the remaining issues are fun as well.
