Anyone reading Cates' Hulk? The 'Starship Hulk' concept grabbed my attention. Boy, is it weird! It's like he turned Hulk into Star Trek for an issue. I'm wondering if the rest of the series is good? I'll probably get at least one more, to see what happens on 'planet Hulk' I read the first arc on Unlimited and thought it was merely ok. For me, it was a huge drop from the level of Ewing's Immortal Hulk, and Cates was in the position of having to be the guy after "the guy" which is not enviable, but after Ewing's depth and development of characters, Cates felt like cardboard cut outs smashing things driven by a "big idea" that had nothing to actually do with the core concept of the characters involved and that the only purpose of it was to provide more smash 'em ups for Hulk to be involved with (hence the whole concept of what "powers" the starship, i.e. pages of mindless fight scenes that have no stakes or purpose except to show Hulk smashing things. I'll check out the second arc to see if it goes anywhere (it's free since I am already getting Unlimited for other things) but Cates hasn't impressed me much though he seems to be the darling of fanboys. I haven't liked his runs on Thor or Doctor Strange much either, and in a crowded field of books to read, his stuff might be among that which I cull to make time to read other things. -M

yeah, I don't get the love for him either...the bits of King in Black did nothing for me, nor did sampling his Thor. His Hulk interested me more than Ewing (I read the 1st trade or two on hoopla and it did nothing for me), but it really was weird. I'll flip through the next one and see next trip to the shop.

My LCS is closing up shop. I am sad to see it gone, but I was not above taking advantage of their sale and got pretty much the entire run of Wicked & Divine!
(also a book of Phonogram, Bunny Mask, Five Fists of Science, and Sleepless)

Hey @mrp! Kate Beaton is speaking at the Portland Book Festival this weekend. She's being interviewed on stage by Dave Miller of Oregon Public Broadcasting for their podcast/radio show Think Out Loud. I'm not sure when the interview will be available, so I'll keep my eyes open for it and post here. Cool. I follow her on twitter and saw her mention she was setting out on a book tour, but I wasn't sure where the stops were. If that interview gets posted, I'd be interested in listening to it. -M @mrp The interview is playing on my radio right now - www.opb.org/article/2022/11/22/think-out-loud-graphic-novel-tackles-life-on-canadian-oil-sands-ducks-two-years-in-the-oil-sands/They hide the download option - right-click the 'play' button and choose "Save audio as" from the menu.

I just listened to the whole thing - I found it really good. Beaton is a good interview subject: she has interesting things to say and her voice comes across well on the radio.

Picked these up from my LCS this week. Vanish #3 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman plus the last two issues of the current Justice Warriors mini series.

Flash #763-#772 and Flash Annual 2021
So I've kind of been out of the loop for a while on DC stuff, so it was nice to just to read just about anything. Haven't read much Flash (maybe a Silver Age issue or two and maybe Waid's Born To Run), but this was actually a pretty damn good read. Starts off with Alchemy going insane because of his Philosopher's stone and then Wally gets lost in the speed force ala Quantum Leap and has to make his way back while avoiding Speed Raptors and the like

Seems kind of weird posting this here, since everything about it (creative team and story) screams 'classic,' but it was published in 2020, so... Marvels Snapshot: Sub-marinerstory: Alan Brenner, art: Jerry Ordway The story here is simple and short, but has so many layers: in the spring of 1946, former cop and reporter Betty Dean is spending an evening with her three brothers, happy that all three of them survived their tours of duty in World War II – although one came back without the lower part of his right leg and another has a severe case of PTSD. The next day she has a date with her kind-of/sort-of boyfriend, Namor, and they visit Palisades Park in New Jersey – however their fun is broken up by Namor’s old foe, the pirate Verril Shark, who’s wearing some kind of Nazi-made exo-suit and robbing the proceeds at the admissions gate. (love the image of Namor throwing down in a polo shirt) Namor then goes a bit berserk as he takes down Shark, threatening to demolish the entire park in the process, so that Betty has to contact the All Winners Squad (Cap, Bucky, Torch, Toro, Miss America and Whizzer) to help get civilians to safety and pull Namor back from the brink. This is simultaneously a fun but also very moving story. Well worth reading, and it makes me wish Brennert had done more stories for Marvel (I still wish he would).

I read that when it came out. Excellent story as all of Brennert’s are. The Human Torch issue of that series of books was also very good. I'm sure the other ones are good, but this one written by Brennert is one I knew *had* to have as soon as I heard about it 2 years ago. Unfortunately, comic book stores here do not carry monthly comics from abroad, so I had to depend on online sellers and finally found a copy recently on eBay from a seller in the UK at a price that wouldn't break my bank (paid the equivalent of about $6 total for it, i.e., price + postage).
...Now all that's left is reacquiring a copy of Daredevil #192, and I'll have every comic story written by Brennert...

Lastly, the next installment for perhaps my favorite thing coming out in contemporary comics-Reckless Book 5: Follow Me Down by Brubaker & Phillips... If you've been reading the Reckless books, this is another great installment in the series. This one shows what Ethan was working on out of town while Anna's case in book 4 was playing out, but also features an epilogue that jumps to 2004 and show what Ethan was up to then (don't worry, it's not the last Ethan story or Reckless book though the team is taking a break to do another project before they do another Reckless OGN). If you haven't been reading Reckless, why not? It is Brubaker/Phillips at the top of their game doing some of their best work of their careers. -M I just got this and read it this weekend. Another fine book by my current favorite writer/artist team. I will happily pick up anything these gentlemen put out.

DC Superhero Girls At Metropolis Highscript: Amy Wolfram, art: Yancey Labat This is basically a 12-page pamphlet, a free giveaway I picked up at a comics show a few years ago and then pretty much forgot I had it until I came across it while looking for something else in m sole box of floppy comics. For those who may not be familiar with the concept, this is a world in which Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Bumblebee, Zatanna and Green Lantern (Jessica Cruz) are teenage girls attending high school while also having superhero (mis)adventures. Here the story is that they're all late for school because they were chasing some supervillain girls (also students in the same school in their secret identities), so the principal tells them to either join extracurricular after-school clubs or get suspended. All of them eventually find a club they want to sign up for except for Kara, who's left standing in front of the sign-up sheets as the book closes... This is basically just a teaser for the Superhero Girls at Metropolis High tpb, but it's still amusing - although I may be more charitably disposed because in the meantime I've watched most episodes of the cartoon, which I absolutely loved.

Went through a few books out of 2 grab bags I got at Newbury comics when we were in Boston (20 newish comics for $15! A great deal).
I checking on the X-Books first:
the last 2 issues of Echo: phoenix Song When I saw this come out, it didn't register to me that Rebecca Roanhorse was writing it (or if it did I forget).. not a bad story, but re-casting the Phoenix force as some sort of Native American legacy seems... too small. If you ignore that, it's not a bad story, but nothing fantastic that I feel the need to go get the 1st 3 issues of.
Next was one issue each of 'X lives of Wolverine' and 'X Deaths of Wolverine'..the first of each. The 'lives' one seemed to be current day Jean Grey and Xavier sending Wolverine back in time to prevent Omega Red (whose mad at the quiet council for tampering with his resurrection)..very Quantum Leap. Reminded me alot of Cable vs. Bishop during Messiah Complex, only in the past instead of the future. Mildly interesting, maybe with some context it'd be worth reading. the 'deaths' one had nothing to do with WOlverine at all, but was Moira MacTaggart running away from Mystique, who is trying to kill her. THe Moira stuff I've hated since they introduced it (Though the result is fun), so hard pass.
Sticking with Wolverine, there was issue 2 of 'Dead Man Logan'.. apparently Old Man logan in our time trying to prevent his future. Been there a few times, done that. Seems like pretty standard stuff. pass
finally, 2 issues of books from the age of X-Man (seems like an Age of Apocalypse redux?) One, Prisoner X,was centered on Bishop getting put in Mutant jail and trying to get to Polaris for reasons that were not clear in this issue. Meh. The 2nd one 'Department X' was a team of mutants, lead by Blob (who has a fantastic porn mustache for some reason) whose job seem to be somewhere between thought police and propaganda for the main X team. There was an interesting side like going that might lead to a relationship between Porn mustache Blob and Psylocke,so if that's something you want to see might be worth it.
Overall, nothing I'll need to run out and check out, but a fun check in on some the the X-events I've not paid attention to.

Today I read one of the too many trades I've ordered from Previews the last couple months... Almost American. It's a (allegedly mostly) true story about a recent Russian defector. Based on the content, seems pretty likely to be true. IT's not really the most exciting book ever, but definitely really interesting.
