I hope you pick up Kong on the Planet of the Apes, I don't usually care too much for crossovers but telling the story of King Kong through the cast of the Apes sounds fun to me. I've grown tired of the shameless crossovers of late, almost regardless of quality level, but I have recently convinced myself to put the POTA/Green Lantern trade on my Amazon wishlist. If I get it, I'll move onto the Kong one after. I just miss seeing creators INVEST in the property long term and try to do something both new and meaningful with the premise. These crossovers (even the better ones) offer precious little of either.

Yeah, I'd definitely rather an original ongoing by a team with something cool to say about the world of the Apes but if they're going to do crossovers I hope they make a certain amount of sense like the last Tarzan one and the current Kong series. But Green Lanterns? Friends don't let friends read that Shax

Wow. For once, I'm glad Kirby didn't get a gig. Not only do those look...not good, but Kirby has confused Galen with Cornelius. Horrible. Absolutely horrible. While it is a sketch, considering he used a couple of the TV characters (1974), this was closing in on mid 70s Kirby art, and if you've seen his 2001: A Space Odyssey, you know how bad things turned in his work. Totally unsuited for the Apes world. *Takes a drink*

These crossovers (even the better ones) offer precious little of either. I've never believed the POTA crossovers were all that interesting. Back in the early 1970s, the idea of Star Trek's world crossing over with POTA was a fairly popular on fans' wish list in some circles, but when the real thing finally happened, it was--for me--not that much of a big deal. I think the basic POTA concept always goes back to the human-meets-ape-oppressors, and in comics, outside of the movie adaptations, Terror on the Planet of the Apes probably handled that the best, with interesting characters taking a path that was linked to the films' overall message, but had its own voice and--before the magazine series' cancellation--a future worth following.

I think the basic POTA concept always goes back to the human-meets-ape-oppressors, And, sometimes, the inversion of that as well. This exactly.

Not sure if you've seen it or are interested, but some folks might be, IDW has just released a Planet of the Apes board game... available through Diamond and your local comic shop. The dudes at Plaid Stallions posted a review of the game with more pics and an overview of game play. Not sure how IDW got the game rights and no thte comic rights (which are still at BOOM! as far as I know). -M

Not sure if you've seen it or are interested, but some folks might be, IDW has just released a Planet of the Apes board game... Thanks much for this! APJAC may have been the slickest multimedia licensing company in all of American history. In the '70s, they granted some very very specific licenses to various companies. Mego could make the figures, Aurora could make the model kits, and a third company could make the toy guns; Gold Key and then Marvel could print the comics, while Power Records could make a different kind of comics that didn't compete. I don't know if those licenses were transferable, or if APJAC is just still thinking big four decades later. Either way, they've never bulk umbrella licensed the franchise out to one company; each element seems tightly controlled.

Cool idea in an era where so many old-style board games have moved to digital formats. I'm not sure if I would "pull the trigger" on this, but if I bought it, I would almost feel like keeping it sealed in the box.

I was really thinking about getting it until I read the review and saw that everyone plays Taylor. The best part of the POTA franchise is the Post-Taylor stuff, in my opinion. Give me a Conquest of the Planet of the Apes boardgame, and I'd be all over it.

While APJAC's merchandising strategy was innovative (certainly setting the stage for Star Wars), I believe certain manufacturers, such as Mego, produced more than one kind of POTA toy line, since they were already a company that made more than action figures (like games and point of purchase / rack toys), as opposed to (for example) Topps, a company only making trading cards, so their POTA license was limited to that one thing.

Here's one for you that should end up in this thread eventually shaxper ... BOOM! is doing an Apes series adapting Rod Serling's unused original screenplay for POTA. (seems to me it's in the vein of the Lucas Draft series Dark Horse did adapting Lucas' original version of the screen play for Star Wars). -M

If only they would adapt his treatments for Beneath and the pilot for the TV series.

It appears that the original Planet of the Apes movie premiered 50 years ago yesterday.
