With convention season in full swing, I thought it would be interesting to discuss this aspect of the scene. What are everyone's thoughts on cosplay, particularly with regards to its presence at conventions? Do you think it's a natural extension of comic book fandom, or is it representative of the growing encroachment of the broader pop culture fandom on comic conventions? Do any here participate in cosplay? What are you thoughts on "sexy" cosplayers at shows where children are present?

I don't go to conventions, but my first response is that I'm all for people being free to express themselves like this and have fun. On a personal level, I've never had the slightest desire to dress up like a comic book character. I could understand it if someone was a performance artist and created their own characters to get a reaction out of people (Think Andy Kaufman.). That to me is far more interesting than being a mimic. But it looks like these people have fun so what do I know?

What are you thoughts on "sexy" cosplayers at shows where children are present? That particular aspect is a non-issue for me. I don't think I've ever heard of parents complaining about two-piece bathing suits at the beach, and even the most reserved two-pieces are more skimpy than what t most of those sexy cosplayers wear. |

I don't do cosplay (unless Halloween counts), but my daughter and her friends do anime cosplay at anime conventions. It's not for me, but I can't see the harm (other than what they spend on it). As to Trebor's point about comparing beach wear to cosplay, I couldn't agree more. As long as the outfit and conduct are appropriate on the beach, it's appropriate for cosplay.

I'm all for it. I think it's fun, and it brings in more female fans, which the hobby needs.
As for sexy cosplay, this was actually a much bigger issue in the past than it is now. This is not a new thing. There was a whole cosplay controversy in the mid/late 70's over the contests being dominated by sometimes literally half-naked girls cosplaying fantasy characters. I forget the details, but I remember reading a story about a con in the late 70's where a guy in a Captain Marvel costume got a standing ovation after he made a comment about if he known he just needed to flash his tits to win, he would have worn a different costume.

Well if a woman does a cosplay as Vampirella than it's sexy by definition of the character. If a man does a cosplay of Conan it's sexy by definition of the character. Both were created with an aspect of them to accentuate feminity and masculinity. It seems reductive to debate if they have a place among other cosplayers. I think that's more in the social outrage department.

At the Baltimore Comic Con 2014, I was standing in line to get some books signed and noticed a fellow -- clearly an older gentleman, based on the full head of gray hair and, er.... musculature of a senior citizen -- wearing nothing but a Tarzan-esque loin cloth. I wonder if it was the same guy. |

I did attend San Diego Comic Con back in 1984 and I was Zorro in full costume. I gave my costume away 10 years ago to another friend of mine and he worn that to several other events as well.
