People have mentioned doing small things when it comes to exercising and I figure every little bit helps. I try to do things like:
always use the stairs If I have to use the bathroom I never use the closest, or one on my current floor park farther away in the lot if I get a craving for candy I'll walk upstairs to get a single piece and eat it downstairs; I may go back for 50 pieces but at least I'm getting 200 floors of stairs in not wanting to get sweaty was an exercise excuse, so before each shower I do a few minutes of jogging in place or push-ups or something jog in place while brushing my teeth, so that's at least 4 minutes a day of light cardio just there

I want to add that water is a big deal when dieting. I read it's the only liquid that actually flushes fat out of the body.

I want to add that water is a big deal when dieting. I read it's the only liquid that actually flushes fat out of the body. I was not aware that fat could be flushed out of the body. But yes, water is key to good health in general, as well as weight loss.

A few push-ups or squats during commercials, for example. After a while you'll get a feeling for how much you can do without working up a sweat, if that's a concern. Even single-digit numbers make a difference if you're doing it throughout the day. If nothing else, it gets you off your arse for a few seconds. Speaking of which, I also like to stand up and walk around a bit when I'm watching tv, or even reading. It felt a bit weird when I first started doing this but again, you get used to it after a while, and it feels normal to me now. Of course living alone makes all this kind of thing a lot easier.

I don't believe the "flushing" quality. . but drinking a lot of water DOES fill up your stomach, and make you feel more full/less hungry. not starting off great, but I DID take the dog for a walk today, so got some exercise. Processing water also burns calories, and since water is zero calories, if you can keep a steady intake of water throughout the day aught to keep your body burning calories at an increased rate.

Well here's a nice boost for Day 2. I knew I'd lose weight more quickly at the start due to shedding retained water and undigested food, but I'm down five frickin' pounds this morning! Just got to remind myself that progress isn't always going to be that immediate and visible.
My starting weight: 265 lbs My ideal weight for my height: 185 lbs My goal: 220 lbs by August (15 lbs per month for three months)
Today's weigh in: 260 lbs
My plan for today:
Breakfast: Two scrambled eggs with ketchup. Black decaf coffee.
Lunch: My homemade stew (garlic, onion, yellow pepper, spinach, tomato paste, cayenne pepper, black pepper, salt, ex virgin olive oil). Organic, choc full of nutrients, vegan, low carb, and low fat.
After work snack: Pineapple slices
Dinner: Two Foreman-grilled chicken breasts marinated in soy sauce with cumin.
Other snacks (if needed): Fresh fruit: strawberries, grapes, pineapple, baby carrots.

Awesome, Shax!!!! And, as you said, your diet is working for you (obviously). Side note about water: Yes, water initially makes you feel full. But, for me at least, if I drink quite a bit of it, in anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, I'm absolutely STARVING. Like, I-haven't-eaten-in-two-days starving. I still drink a TON of water. Every day. I have for YEARS. I cannot imagine not drinking quarts of water a day.

How goes eating in Chile, George? Ate the big meal at about 3pm and It was coffee and small rolls at night as the last meal. My body is rebelling by bloating up. It always does that. When i get back to NY I will be in control.

I'm a naturally thin guy with a small-boned frame, but as I've gotten older I've found that I will put on weight if I eat a lot of junk. I'm a believer in the low-carb-high-protein approach, as long as you make sure you're getting your fruit and vegetables every day. At least, that's what works for me. I also find that not eating anything at all at night helps. Not stuffing myself to beyond full is important, too. Apart from that, I think it's basically a matter of calories in and calories out. I don't count calories, but I have a pretty good sense of roughly what I can eat in any given day without putting on the flab. This is pretty much my weight as well. My father was/is the same way. He maintains a very thin frame even at 60-something now, because he enjoys healthy food. So he doesn't have the issue that I can see creeping up on me as I get older (though mostly from non-light and heavy beers) with possible weight gain. The most that I have ever had to deal with weight is seeing my mother diet her whole life while I was at home, trying to loose weight for her own self esteem, as I would learn when I got older. My wife was overweight when I met her, and back in 2001-2002, before our first son was born in 2003 she had gastric bypass surgery, as her weight was life threatening. She lost a lot of weight. She was in the neighborhood of 300+ at that time, and 9-12 months after that she got down to like 160 or so. Between then and now, she's always said a low carbohydrate diet was always better for her weight and for her feeling overall healthy. Edit: A question to ask to anyone that might know from experience ... Does eating less, like, 2 meals a day, even if it's "unhealthy" make a difference in either weight gain or loss? I don't eat often. I rarely eat breakfast, sometimes just snack at lunch (cheese crackers, popcorn, single serve mac&cheese you can microwave) and then eat dinner, whatever that might be. But I am bad about eating late. Maybe an hour before I sleep.

But I am bad about eating late. Maybe an hour before I sleep. It's been a popular theory that smaller meals throughout the day improves your metabolism, but no science to back it up. Same with eating late vs early. It's all calories in/calories out. Well, mostly. There's a reason water is healthier than a zero calorie diet soda, but scientists are still trying to figure out why diet soda can increase belly fat. Right now it's just because water is better, and that's it.

My man DuPont has covered it well, but let me add a few things- The body is a calorie counter. It doesn't matter what you THINK your giving it, it responds to the actual calories. It takes 3500 calories to gain or lose one pound. That's why it's best to combine diet and excercise to create a deficit equalling that amount. The theory of more smaller meals throughout the day is sound because it spreads out your calories into 6 instead of 3 or 2. But do it anyway you want to achieve your goals.
