Started biking to Work last week and so far its extremely hard. I am not completely out of shape but the distance is still pretty hard for me. 10 Km each way (a Little over 6 miles I think?) so 20 Km a day. So far its only a couple of times a week I do it, but I can see that my weight loss has changed a Little by doing this. This combined with a healthier diet has helped a lot. My weight has only dropped a Little because I have started to lift weights Again, but i can feel some of my cloths is looser on me. Great feeling.

You'll be surprised how quickly you get into it (assuming your ride isn't up a mountainside!) - when I restarted, I practised on an exercise bike for a couple of weeks, doing the approximate time my commute would take, then took to the bike. After a couple of weeks, it got markedly easier and after a couple of months, hills that I found challenging at the start felt barely more than flat ground (admittedly helped by tackling much harder hills at other times)

I worked out for a hour this morning - no match today and I weigh myself afterwards and down to 255. Lost a pound in 10 days when you have water polo matches you burn a lot of calories and get very hungry afterwards. I don't mind losing a pound in 7-10 days and keep it off. This is a rare time for me to work out this morning and I don't do this very often. I'm taking the weekend off and I have a double match on Monday of which it's can be exhausting afterwards.

At the end of this week, I am now down a total of seven pounds. That, in itself, is a lot less impressive than last time I was on the program, but what's a lot more impressive is that I'm intentionally trying to do this slower this time. By saying on diet for breakfast and lunch, Monday thru Friday, and trying to eat sensibly but enjoyably for dinners and weekends, I'm trying to create a new lifestyle for myself instead of a diet. At no point has this new program felt hard over the past three weeks. I'm genuinely starting to believe this is weight loss I can sustain. I dropped six pounds in the first week and a quarter pound each week after. A quarter pound a week sounds like the right kind of progress.
While my wife moving out in three more weeks will be extremely tough, it will also leave me with time to exercise too, so hopefully this will be good for my health instead of bad.
Proud of everyone's efforts here and happy to be back on the wagon.

I'm proud of you shax. Ultimately, your weight and health is your responsibility and no one else's. Sorry that your wife is still determined to go, but that story is still not over.

I'm genuinely starting to believe this is weight loss I can sustain. This is really key, and sounds like you're on the right track - ultimately it's a hell of a lot easier to stick to an "improved lifestyle" that you're comfortable with than a "diet" that feels like a straight-jacket

In my news, I've had a stop/start week on the bike, but post-dysentry I'm back down to 160.8. Aiming to start the weight programme seriously next week.

All the muscle building info I read says to eat lots of protein. One gram per pound of weight. I've been lifting for 3 months but while cutting my calories. Good luck , SG.

I've not really paid any attention to my macros while losing weight, and I've definitely lost muscle mass as well as fat, probably as a result. So, I'm pretty lean now, but defnitely too skinny for my frame. I think my optimum weight would be somewhere around 170-175, with 10-15 pounds of additional muscle from where I am at the moment - as I go into the weights I'm going to be both eating more and paying more attention to the macros.
I don't think my macros are actually all that far away from what I need, I just need to up my calories and get into the structured weights programme, rather than the kind of marking time / getting ready phase I've been in for the last couple of months (as I didn't want to start and then stop for the holiday break)

Back down to 160.2 this morning, tantalisingly close to the 60lb loss mark - hoping to hit that over the next day or two, then probably going to call it a day with the weight loss and start eating more for muscle growth.

Nice achievement , GS. Do you feel physically strong, or did the massive weight loss eat a lot of muscle?

That's actually a tough question to answer. I've definitely lost muscle mass, and certainly some stregth, but I'm not sure whether there's a single cause for the strength or whether it's a combination of things. There a number of possible culprits - weight loss, age, and the fact that, until the last 3 months or so, I've spent virtually no time doing weight training for the last 4-5 years. It's probably a bit of all 3, mostly the last one.
It's not uniform though - I'm pretty unhappy with my bench press and (particularly) OHP, but my back and legs are OK - so rows and deadlifts are reasonable, and squats would probably be OK if I pushed them, but I'm taking those a bit easy at the moment for the sake of my knees.

I was 30 lbs overweight in my early 50's. Lost 25 lbs after my heart attack 3 years ago because it scared me into a healthier lifestyle. I ate better & exercised more & cut back my work hrs.
Unfortunately my work schedule has been crazy the last year (working 12+ hr days/60 hr weeks) & I gained back about 15 lbs. (eating poorly & little exercise). I want to cut back my hrs again so I can get back to a healthier lifestyle.

After the late 30's, the health issues will come if you're very overweight. I've decided to get down in weight and become stronger so my job could be easier. I do a lot of waking ,climbing and lifting during the week. Lifting weights the past 3 months has helped me greatly.
