So, I took a shot on Avengers World (1st trade). It starts with Cap and Maria Hill deciding to have the Avengers and SHIELD work together again, leading to 3 different missions, one on AIM Island (which is apparently suddently super high tech), one in Madripoor (which completely ignores the current X-Men plot where Mystique bought it), and one in Italy. Three different teams are dispatched... all three lose. To be continued. Yup. 5 issues, we get the story moving 'several hours' (per the story).. took about 25 minutes to read. As a bonus, we get Sunspot and Cannonball infiltrating AIM Island (from the Now .1 issue), which was the best part of the volume for sure, but also didn't end. Anyone know if any of the hanging threads actually finish? For 5 issues, I expect at least a little story. On the plus side, it actually FEELS like the Avengers, even with the spotlight on characters I don't care about in several cases.. this would have been a really good bronze age issue. As 5 issues, it was pretty disappointing. As dupersuper said, you can bank on hanging threads being tied together in a title Hickman is plotting. It also seems like the solo stories were to flesh out newer characters before starting the bigger picture storyline. On top of all of that, there are threads from the Hickman title Secret Warriors coming back around in Avengers World.

New Avengers Annual #1 a Doctor Strange solo story by Frank Barbiere & Marco Rudy... some samples of Marco Rudy's art.. and... It's not often that a new comic blows me away...this one did. This is very much the modern Dr. Strange after everything Bendis & Hickman have put him through, but it's a story that can sit alongside the Englehart Brunner classics of a Doc exploring strange worlds and doing what is necessary to protect the earth as its Sorcerer Supreme. I've really enjoyed Barbiere's work on Five Ghosts form Image and Rudy's artwork is a revelation, so very trippy and perfect for a Doc story. From the rumors I've heard this isn't the regular team on the upcoming Doc solo book, but I wish it was. Great stuff. It will go up on my Doc shelf alongside my other favorite Doc tales. -M Gonna pick this up. Dr Strange is so cool and this looks ok. If they can keep him in his title without crisscrossing everywhere and every event, this could be a great stand alone.
I haven't bought a Marvel since they axed Agents of Atlas. That was really good.
Oh yeah, getting that Savage Hulk too. Alan Davis, right ?!

The artwork looks fantastic, but I'm not much interested in the Bendis-era Strange as a character. Would love to see this artist work on a Doctor Strange series, though, if only writing could match the quality of the art.

Per mrp's recommendation, I bought and read this myself today. It's straight up a Dr. Strange solo story. Doesn't tie in to anything. I can't think of any reason to have an Avengers logo on this book other than to get extra sales, as it really should just be a Dr. Strange one-shot. But, whatever. Marvel would slap an Avengers logo on my sack if they thought it would increase sales. The comic itself was good. The art was excellent and the story was solid. As someone who has not read anything from Marvel in a few years (other than Hawkeye and the new Ms. Marvel series), and therefore has no idea what is happening with the character, I thought the portrayal of Dr. Strange was very clearly inspired by the Peter B. Gillis Strange Tales run. Which is fine, as that's one of my favorite Dr. Strange stories ever. It just meant that this take on Dr. Strange did not seem quite so revolutionary as maybe it's supposed to feel for readers. Good issue, though. As for it not seeming "quite so revolutionary", that Gillis series was over 25 years ago; only us old-timers actually remember it. To the folks who only know Dr. Strange as a member of the Avengers and Illuminati, it probably does seem like something brand-new. And I just may have to make "Marvel would slap an Avengers logo on my sack if they thought it would increase sales" my new signature, as I literally laughed out loud when I read that.

how is batman meets the green hornet? i was tempted by that one It's not as fun as the Jeff Parker comics and you can tell some of the dialogue was written by Kevin Smith but other than that it's been solid. New Avengers Annual #1 a Doctor Strange solo story by Frank Barbiere & Marco Rudy... Marco Rudy's artwork in that issue is incredible.

Ellis & Shalvey/Bellaire's latest MOON KNIGHT is the most badass-- and perhaps best in general-- yet. I'm gonna miss this'un in two months.
And I don't know if this belongs in the 'classics you've read lately'-thread, but whatevs; IDW's WEIRD LOVE is turning out to probably be an even bigger 'can't-miss' reprint series than frelling MIRACLEMAN! Ogden Whitney's "Love For A Lunatic" alone, man... it's got everything from Ronnie Reagan: Teen Hearthrob to an act of bear-punching 4 decades before Ennis went anywhere near The Punisher!

***Uncanny X-Men Spoilers***
I just read that the reason Cyclops, Emma, Magneto and Illyana are now stuck with screwed-up powers is not a post-partum reaction following the loss of their Phoenix powers, but is the result of an infection by nano-sentinels.
I must say that's a very welcome plot twist; just the kind that seems to say "this was planned from the start" and not "we're making it up as we go along". I could never quite understand why the Phoenix power would have messed up the X-Men's powers, since it never did so with all the other transient hosts it visited over the years. I couldn't understand why the effect would be delayed for a few weeks either; after all, neither Magneto nor Cyclops seemed to notice anything was amiss after AvX until they busted Emma out of jail.
Their assumption that the problem must be due to their recent experience was quite logical, though. (Now I wonder if they're the only five mutants affected, and if so... why?)
I might just have to buy the next collection!

My pick-ups for the month (I'm down to just three "new" books each month, and they all ship the same week)
All-New X-Factor #10 - after a slow start, PAD has really been humming along the last few issues with this book. Interesting new villain, some snarky comments from Quicksilver, and Gambit finds out what happens when you get caught sleeping with your boss's wife.
Captain America #22 - this wasn't bad, but nothing too memorable. Cap spends most of the issue in bed (in a bad way) after the events of last issue, Falcon and Jet Black spend some time in bed together (in a good way), and the rest of the "Big 4" Avengers show up to help against Red Skull and Arnim Zola.
Moon Knight #5 - well, thebeastofyuccaflats wasn't lying when he said that this was Marc Spector at his most bad-ass in a long time. It's a one-and-done, as the other issues in the series have been so far, but this is the first one that felt like a complete story to me. It's a symphony of violence punctuated by some great one-liners from the titular hero.

I picked up Original Sin 0-3 a little while ago and got around to reading them now. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them. I ordered 4-5 right away. I usually dislike big events but Aaron is a greet writer with some crazy ideas. I'm going to have to check out some more of his stuff. Any recommendations from him would be welcome.
