Oddly, the last three people in sports to get the Presidential Medal of Freedom: Dean Smith, Ernie Banks and golfer Charlie Sifford all died in the last two weeks.

Last of the big name free agent starters signs as James Shields signs a 4 year deal with the San Diego Padres for a reported $72-74 million over the 4 years with an option for the 5th year. Petco pitcher's park should help Shields maintain his numbers, and the Padres continue their extreme makeover, and all their moves look good on paper but we'll see how they perform on the field. They could be a defensive trainwreck as none of the bats they brought in are particularly good fielders.

They could be a defensive trainwreck as none of the bats they brought in are particularly good fielders. -M They have a good rotation with Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, and Shields at the top (although I personally feel like they are giving Shields, a glorified innings eater with few actual accomplishments, way too much money for what they'll get in return), but they still have no true centerfielder and their infield defense is atrocious. Add in the offense-dampening Petco Park and the 2015 Padres have all the makings of a overpriced catastrophe. |

I am not a fan of Shields. I think he's overrated. I'm not unhappy that the Sox passed on him.

I feared the Cubs were going to toss a big contract at him too. No need to go after more experienced pitching until the kids in the field prove themselves.

I am not a fan of Shields. I think he's overrated. I'm not unhappy that the Sox passed on him. Yeah I am glad the Sox passed on Shields too, and I continue to hope they do not under any circumstances trade for Cole Hamels (especially if it costs them Betts or Swihart). Hamels will be fool's gold if he goes to the AL (his interleague numbers are bad and against the AL East they are atrocious). I'd rather see the Sox wait until the trade deadline to see what they have with some of the prospects and the starting 5 before dealing for a rent a starter ace or some other long term solution. It's another big free agent class of starters next offseason and they only have 1 guy on the last year of a deal (Porcello), and they have a lot of in house evaluation they have to do with guys from JBJr to Owens and everyone in between before they start trading for "need" or sending away top level prospects. I wouldn't mind seeing them dealing off some extra pieces (Nava, Victorino, Craig, etc.) or a mid level blocked prospect like Cecchini (with Devers coming behind him and Panda in front of him he has no future with the Sox unless he moves to 1B to replace Napoli after next year when his contract is up) for bullpen depth of bottom of the rotation depth to help survive injury attrition a 162 game season has on a pitching staff. -M |

NFL FILMS Founder - Ed Sabol dies today. Edwin Milton "Ed" Sabol was an American filmmaker and the founder of NFL Films. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 as a contributor due to his works with NFL Films. He was 98 years old when he died. ESPN LINK |

Tark the Shark died yesterday at the age of 84; Jerry Tarkanian died on February 11th, in Las Vegas Nevada. One of the College Basketball best coaches and a Hall of Famer as well. One of my favorites as well.

It's truck day woot! woot! Spring must be nearing..... -M Only in New England do we celebrate the day the equipment truck heads to Florida. All that snow (with another 12-18 inches on the way, and fans were still out there cheering it on. We're Boston Strong, but we're also Boston Strange, I guess. Still wouldn't have it any other way. Great city, great people, great team. Truck arrives in South Jersey tonight, South Carolina Friday night and the Fort on Saturday morning. Same guy's been doing the run for years. Most of the team is in camp already. |

One of my favorite golf tournaments of the year started today at Pebble Beach. It may be known as the AT&T National Pro-Am these days, but to me it will always be known as "The Crosby."

Next it's going to be revealed that Tom Brady was actually what Babe Ruth was pointing at for "The Called Shot", is a Titanic survivor, was at the Gettysburg Address, watched the signing of the Declaration on Independence, and caught sweat from Jesus' brow at the Crucifixion. |
