Prince HalThe San Diego Padres have announced they are moving (former Red Sox) Xander Boagarts from Shortstop to second base. SS is a premiere position and the Padres have now signed 2 players Boegarts and Fernando Tatis to decade long $300+ million contracts to be their anchor at shortstop for the remainder of their careers and now neither is playing shortstop for them. Tatis is in right field and now Boagarts is at 2B, neither of which position really garners the type of contract each has unless the player is a generational talent (and as good as both X and Tatis might be they are not generational talents). They Pad have a glove first SS (Kim) they will play at SS, moving him from 2B where he played last year, but he is a free agent soon. Meanwhile, thinking they had SS locked up for the future, they have shifted every talented SS prospect they have to other positions, particularly outfield because they traded away their 2 best outfielders (Juan Soto who is close to being a generational talent type hitter) to lower their payroll because they were way over the luxury tax threshold because they signed two SS to 10 year $300 million + contracts in the past couple of years. So they have nothing in the organizational pipeline to take over at SS if Kim leaves in free agency. So they might have to go out and sign a 3rd SS to a premium deal is available or try to trade for one taking on huge salary and giving up a boatload of prospects to fill the potential void. It's rare to see such mismanagement on a team that is so rich in talent. Usually mismanagement leads to teams being talent starved and irrelevant, but this is Mets-type idiocy that you don't see often outside Queens. -M

Padres thought they could spend their way to a championship, maybe b/c the owner was so ill (?) and thought that lightning would strike. It did, just in all the wrong places. Meanwhile, we have Cora as a lame duck, more rumors about Jansen being traded, a rotation from hell, and Breslow sounding more like Bloom than Bloom did. Oh, and those crappy new Nike unis. But... the Fenway Experience.

I learned something new today - a fen is an alkaline wetland. An acidic wetland is called a bog.
So if the Charles River estuary were more acidic, the Red Sox would be playing in Bogway Park.

I feel like Boston won't spend money until tourists get tired of 'the Fenway Experience' Hopefully soon. This might be my year to root for Baltimore.. we'll see maybe it won't be as bad as it seems.
I half expect to see that they traded for Bogaerts every morning... seems like the sort of thing this management team would do.

Given their current state, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the guy they got back: Although, come to think of it, he might be a real addition to the team.

Attention, MRPs_Missives... Looks like I won’t be able to use Giolito for a Bosox-Chisox square in Immaculate grid till next season... www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/03/red-sox-lucas-giolito-elbow-issue-injured-list-opening-day.htmlHere's the nut: "Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito experienced discomfort in his right elbow after his most recent throwing session, manager Alex Cora announced Tuesday morning (X link via Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic). He’ll undergo additional testing, but ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the initial diagnosis is a partial tear of the right ulnar collateral ligament and a flexor strain. A determination on treatment won’t be made until Giolito receives additional opinions, but season-ending surgery is obviously now on the table."

I heard that this morning (I have my Alexa device set up to follow Red Sox news, so it gave me an alert before I saw anything online about it). Giolito is on a 1 year deal with player option for '25 (not sure if there's a buyout) so there's a chance he never pitches for the Sox, but I can't see him not taking the option for next year if he misses the entire season as I don't think he will get better offers elsewhere due to health concerns (he already had TJ surgery once coming out of college). Curious to see if this pushes the Sox into signing one of the remaining pitches on the market-I still think they avoid Montgomery/Snell, but maybe going for a Rich Hill reunion on a 1 year deal, or exploring someone like Zach Grienke or Mike Clevinger on a 1 or 2 year deal. -M

If he indeed picks up that player option, the team would be granted a $14MM club option for the 2026 season. Giolito could then convert that into a mutual option by pitching 140 innings in 2025." Heard Hill a day or so ago saying that he'll wait the trade deadline, so we'll see. I don't think they'll go for either of the Montgomery/Snell duo, but it's certain they'll need some kind of a warm body or two toot sweet.

I think it's entirely likely they go with what they have... I don't think ownership cares if they win 65 games or 75 games.. and that feels like the ceiling to this team.

It's always a good thing when PBS will put one of their full documentaries on Youtube. It's even better when it's about a ground-breaking figue like Roberto Clemente. One of the first Latino baseball players and still one of the greatest. Both an athlete and humanitarian.
