Not as big a deal as they used to be, perhaps. Remember the grainy B and W TV ads that featured Tom Carvel, his umistakable gravelly voice, his decidedly unpolished, first-take narration extolling the virtues of the "Fudgie the Whale" cake? Fudgie was so cleverly designed that he could also be the Easter Bunny, a Valentine, Santa Claus, a leprechaun's hat, a jack o'lantern, a turkey, etc.  And there was also Cookie Puss, who was as disturbing to look at as Eraserhead's baby:  |
