A bit of thread crossover - I think Kurt once told me that Cyclops' pose on this cover is a swipe from a Kirby panel somewhere. Anyone recognize it? Yeah, Cyke is from X-Men #10--so is Iceman! Marvel Girl is from X-Men #9. Angel is from Fantastic Four #28, which guest-starred--you guessed it--the X-Men.

This wasn't a terrible Spidey appearance. Stan wrote him in character.

This issue amounted to being just another misunderstanding slugfest but it was worth it just for this splash.

Yeah that one wasn't Godawful, but it was a below average Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four story for sure.
Still my third favorite on the list after the two earliest DD stories.
Threre was a later Daredevil one where SPider-man was running around fighting the Sub-Mariner, wasn't there? I forgot if that was any good. (Or if it counts as Silver Age.)

Was that Professor X head-shot always part of the logo back then? First I noticed it. Interesting way to get around not having enough space to fit him in the trademark Marvel rectangle in the upper left-hand corner.

It's memorable to me as one of the few Daredevil issues I read from that era, and for how it drove home that Spider-Man and the Sub-Mariner were both way out of DD's league in terms of power - IIRC some alien leader abducts those first two and leaves DD rather ignominiously lying on the ground - as if he wasn't worth bothering with. Colan's realistic artwork drove the point home. But these are impressions from 40-something years ago - haven't read the issue since it was first out. And I never did read the sequel to find out what happened. Wasn't there another, earlier Spider-Man appearance in the FF that was good? Or maybe the one I'm thinking of took place in Spider-Man's own series.

I think that's Daredevil #77. Some might consider it late Silver Age but I think most would consider it early Bronze Age. I used to have it but it's been so long I don't remember the story at all. I remember the cover though!
Also I think it's the first time Spider-Man and Sub-Mariner ever met.

Are you sure? Let me flip through. Let's see... Strange Tales 115, Tales to Astonish 57, Avengers 11, X-Men 27...
Yeah, looking bad. That first Daredevil arc is to my mind excellent, and probably going on my top 100 Spider-Man list I'm hard at work on. But there's nothing special about DD27. Not terrible, mind you. Hard to argue with Colan. Just not great.
Let's see. X-Men 35, Not Brand Echh 2... Aha!
Not Brand Echh 6, "With this ring, I thee web!" The wedding of Spider-Man and Wasp is a classic, also a strong contender for the top 100.
So that's two great Spidey appearances.
And then we get to FF 73. That I'm going to call a good comic, as other have seemed to contend.
So we're up to 3.
Not Brand Echh 11.
And Silver Surfer 14 is an excellent issue. That's 4.
And then there's the strange but pretty cool Daredevil/Namor crossover from DD 77 and Sub-Mariner 40.
And then Gwen dies, so that's the Silver Age.
So I contend there are 5 very good Spider-Man guest appearances in the Silver Age. And 8 bad to mediocre ones.

It seems that issues 3-22(except #14) had Angel flying across the top of the cover and the first with the Prof. X headshot was issue # 24 and ran through issue #38.

Even more newsworthy, it contains the first and only appearance of Mary Gwen Watson!

Ha - didn't remember that scene - when I saw it here I thought maybe they coloured Mary Jane<s hair blonde by mistake through confusion with Karen Page, but that would still leave Peter Parker's black hair to explain.

Peter's hair could indeed be attributed to the colorist, but it's clear Colan drew a light-haired character in this sequence. Some red dye, wouldn't have made her MJ.
