Just plain hideous. I prefer the previous New 52 look.

I still maintain that the best recent revision of Superman's costume is the one from Smallville Season 11.

Why did they change it? or is this just artistic license?

Oh Lord I can't say enough negative things about new coke superman. It shouldn't be possible but he gets uglier every time I look at him. Every time. God it's atrocious looking. Makes me seriously miss the electric blue superman. At least we knew it was temporary. Do away with the collar, the goofy sleeve cuffs, the rediculous "lines" and change the red belt maybe to yellow? Or something and maybe I could stomache it? I dunno. This is a real sore subject for me.

It's an ugly drawing, to be sure, but what's so bad about the costume? Much as I dislike tampering with the classics, giving Superman more of a futuristic look, as opposed to a 1930s circus strongman look, makes a lot of sense to me.

I work at the public library, so it gives me access to the New 52 graphic novels for free. (I refuse to buy anything New 52.) I only read them cause the stories are good. Some of the costume changes on the heroes I can live with, but what they have done with Superman's look is just awful, and is seems to be getting worse!

The Smallville season 11 costume has so many things going for it. It echoes the classic elements of Superman's traditional costume, but makes it more modern -- i.e., gets rid of the briefs. But even in getting rid of the briefs, the red/yellow of the belt echoes the colors of the traditional belt/brief combo, and provides the same function of the briefs breaking up the blue monotone of the bodysuit. Perhaps the one mildly objectionable change might be the two-tone blue on the suit. But in most cases the colorist makes it a subtle contrast, so it's enough to be different but not glaring. For the record, I would have been perfectly happy if they kept the classic suit for the new 52. But if they had to change it, something like the Smallville suit would have been the way to go.
My own completely unfounded speculation is that JR Jr (and probably a lot of the other artists) didn't like drawing the Jim Lee designed suit, but he was the only one with enough clout to have it changed.

The only version of the costume I like is the original suit. The Nu52 redesigns are just hideous.

This particular rendering is pretty bad, I don't like JRjr at all, but I think someone with a cleaner technique could make the design work.

So I got back from a trip to my LCS to pick up my pull list haul for the week. Apparently Superman #38, which is the issue debuting the new suit as well as Superman's newest power, is the latest book to have attracted the attention of speculators. My LCS was all sold out -- and this is a store that is fairly large and is usually well-stocked on A-list titles like Superman. I was actually pretty annoyed at this turn of events. I have been reading the Johns/Romita run, but it wasn't on my pull list. Now I can't even get a copy of the issue when all I want to do is read the story. Freaking speculators...
