Speaking of Flash Gordon, I remembered something interesting.
In the Adventures Of Superman pilot episode, Jor-El is wearing the Flash Gordon costume from the 3rd serial. Son of a Gun, you are absolutely right!

I got around to watching a little known 1935 serial from Mascot Pictures, THE MIRACLE RIDER, a modern-day cowboy film with minor fantasy-elements. This was the last major film from silent western star Tom Mix, whom I imagine most of us know from offhand references. The 1988 film SUNSET tells a fictional story about the interaction of Tom Mix (played by Bruce Willis) and Wyatt Earp (James Garner). Though it's primarily an action-adventure thriller it's a little stronger on Native American rights than most serial westerns. I saw the DVD release by Alpha Video and reviewed it in more depth here.

In the late 50's it seems that serial costumes were reused for TV. I don't have a photo of it but in this same Supman episode, there was another Kryptonain named Gorgan who is wearing Captain Marvel's shirt from the serial. A fancy cloth collar was added to the shirt to make it look different, but you can see part of the lightening bolt on the chest and the gold sleeve cuffs to know where it's from.

I've been meaning to re-watch the 1944 CAPTAIN AMERICA sooner or later, so this thread moved me to make it sooner. An excerpt: "As Republic serials go, CAPTAIN AMERICA is just fair. It delivers a decent collection of hard-hitting fights and exotic death-traps, and Purcell is nicely doubled by stuntman Dale Van Sickel. Female lead Lorna Gray, playing an aide to Gardner, is given a spunky characterization (at one point she fools a Scarab henchman into disclosing his identity) and has one shootout with a thug that ends badly for said thug. But for modern viewers the actor to watch is Lionel Atwill. No one could screw a monocle into his eye as malefically as could Atwill." Full review here.

I am not sure I had seen any film serials prior to this thread, so this had been fun. I decided I should watch no more than an episode in a night, so it's hard to get through too many at that rate. But I intend to continue. I finished Adventures of Captain Marvel and Flash Gordon, both of which were excellent. And I have a couple episodes left in Batman, which is one of the first superhero films I have ever seen. I'll try to bang out those episodes tonight to finish the month with 3 serials complete.
A single 15 minute episode takes little enough time out of a night, that I feel I should be able to keep up this pace. Soon I will start another, likely Spy-Smasher, based on the glowing reviews here.

It's March. What goes on here? I only see lists of serials for me and thwht, but it seemed there were at least a few other people watching serials, robsuperfriend, and gothos and such.
Who watched what? Are there lists?
Who won?

Who watched what? Are there lists? Who won? Let's give it another day, if others don't update their lists I say you get to pick the theme.

I was planning to claim victory for coke & comics, but we can wait a day if you guys prefer.
I was very excited for serial viewing this month, but life had other plans.

I was planning to claim victory for coke & comics, but we can wait a day if you guys prefer. I was very excited for serial viewing this month, but life had other plans. While I like winning, I am afraid there are participants who just missed a step in the rules and don't have visible lists. I feel like robsuperfriend thought of himself as participating and want to make sure he has a fair shot. Or we can clarify the rules for next month and I can name a theme for y'all.

I think it's safe to call you the winner for this month. If folks don't understand the rules, we'll make sure they know them next month.

Now that should be something I can fit in. My personal time has been nil as of late, but my girls enjoy the Studio Gibli classics quite a bit!

I just recently read the novelization of my Neighbor Totoro and was planning on tracking down the film so I'm down with this theme.

I just recently read the novelization of my Neighbor Totoro and was planning on tracking down the film so I'm down with this theme. Totoro is an odd film in so many respects. What folks remember most is Totoro himself, but he actually spends very little time in the film.
