Whew, not as crazy as I thought! I like the solitude too! When I was in high school, my science teacher told me I could bring my lunch and eat in his classroom if I didn't want to stay in the cafeteria. He never stayed in his room, so I was alone. And the security cameras were always both a help and a hindrance to me. So, that's kinda like when you eat in the office alone. The quiet is nice, I agree. and yeah I'm not huge on having an audience either, and even if it wounds harsh, I don't want to befriend the staff. I'm sure they're great people, I just don't like to converse with people...much. I wasn't social much in high school and I've never been much of an eater. Most days I didn't eat so I could go outside when the weather was good and be alone. Sometimes I'd hang out where the pot smokers went cause I've always found them a no bs kind of people. They'd let me sit with them though I never partook. I agree with that too. When my wife and I go out the best tip a guy or gal is going to get is based on their skill and service as their job is not how friendly (or over friendly I've had from both genders) they are to me. I come to eat and/or drink not party. I'm kind of a crab ass that way I guess. It's why I rarely do go out because I realize that about myself. Actually in most all other aspects of my life I'm though of as antisocial by many just because I'm a listener more than a talker with anyone outside my wife and boys. You actually had those? I thought they were just movie extras! The pot smokers, I mean. I've seen tons of movies with them as characters, but I've never heard anyone in real life tell about actually having them present. I can totally see why you'd hang out with them over the rest of the populace! And exactly. I don't go out to party, either. I'm out with a few friends (like one or two) and my family. I don't go to have a great time with a stranger or something. I mostly listen too, and no worries. I'm crabby in a lot of aspects as well!

As far as Chain Establishment - I usually go to a Denny's now and then and the prices are reasonable and I usually go there when the time is right - not so busy so I can get good service and the food is generally cooked well. I don't go there that often, but I'm more impartial to eating at a Local place because of everything about it is generally more superior than a chain.
I went to Denny's for breakfast this morning and that's when I go the most often. Had an excellent breakfast there.

I definitely prefer local places. The only time I go to chains is when I'm traveling and just want to find a place quick.

If I travel I want to try the local places where I go to see what they do in that area. But I can see not doing that if you are under time constraints.

And finally: anonymity. This is the silly reasoning. I have paranoia and prefer to be able to eat and hopefully not be recognized. Or not have a place where the staff knows me and what I like. I get like that once in a while, where I just don't feel up to making conversation.

Well, when I say " traveling", I mean enroute and trying to drive somewhere before I fall asleep.

That's why I love the Yelp app. Doesn't really take any more time to find a good local place as it does a McDonalds or a gas station.

If I didn't want to talk to anyone and be left alone in peace to eat I'd just stay home and order in. I don't care much for the forced fake "give me a bigger tip" sort of niceness from servers, but most of the places my wife and I frequent aren't like that at all. It's usually busy enough that you are only going to have a minute or two worth of conversation even with servers you know well. To each their own though!

I go to a lot of local places. Some of which I'm a major regular. And I don't find that anyone bothers me with forced chatter or anything else. And that's with me living in a very small town and having a pretty prominent job.

Its not the chain of stores it used to be, there might only be a few left, but no one, I say no one, makes French Fries like Nathans. You can stuff that in your bag of potatoes, Slam

You can stuff that in your bag of potatoes, Slam whew for a sec I thought you were being rude however I see you are referring to Slam's profile pic of a bag of potatoes. LOL At Nathan's I assume the fries are frozen and then fried. I know chains and locals will do the frozen type fries however I've found a few that are cut fresh and fried to perfection and if you want to go the extra mile they can be topped with an assortment of things. I personally prefer the one that are made on premise and straight from the potato and fried up preferably with the skins still on them and then seasoned well.

I ate a few Nathan's in my lifetime and do make one mean french fries that left me mouthwatering for more! I always look out for them when I do travel on the road occasionally.

I'm kind of torn on this issue as here in Green Bay, a lot of the mom & pop places offer very similar menus with much of the food being overly greasy and just as expensive as the chain places in town. I do find that our Chinese and Thai mom & pop places are pretty good though. That being said, some of my favorite restaurants are Panera, the Cheesecake Factory, and Qdoba.
