Archie’s survival isn’t surprising at all. It’s a strong concept. So strong that if you look at comics in the late 60’s you’ll find DC, Marvel, Tower, Harvey, etc. putting out dozens of Archie clones trying to tap into that market. Meanwhile the Fighting Hobo and Fantomah, both of which are (conservatively) 74,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times stronger concepts than Batman are lost to history. There's no justice, I tells ya. I'm not familiar with with the Fighting Hobo or Fantomah, but I consider the Batman concept to be a very strong one. Best Origin stories: Spider-Man Batman Iron Man Thor

Best Origin stories: Spider-Man Batman Iron Man Thor I'll agree with you on three of your four, but Thor? His origin is "he was born an uber-powerful god." Not a whole lot of drama or pathos there. And no Captain America? "Sickly kid who refused to take 'no' for an answer when it came to serving in the military and undergoes an experimental process to become the ultimate soldier" isn't good enough for you?

Ha, I like the version that Thor is sent to earth with a disability to learn humility. Of course there are many more good origins, But I find it obnoxious to have a 105 name list.

I have to go with Superman as having the greatest origin among super-heroes; refugee from another planet, great stuff! Tarzan among general adventure types; savage, strange to us, raised by apes. I don't like her comics so much but Wonder Woman had a packed with stuff origin; it came with a mysterious island shrouded in fog like Skull island in King Kong, populated by an H. Rider Haggard style lost civilization of Greek God worshiping Amazons, and then the lasso of truth! By contrast exposure to radiation/chemicals or a creature of nature inspiring someone doesn't grab me a lot. Batman has the avenging his parents thing though, and Spider-Man his uncle Ben, and avenging is a good motive.
The silver age Green Lantern origin is second only to Superman, especially once you got to see other acting GLs from other places, and the '60s Hawkman and Hawkwoman as police from another planet is cool as heck to me too. Fantomah was from the Fiction House Jungle comics and I never did read the origin story. I only remember The Lost World Of Hunt Bowman having more of a set-up to it among the Fiction House characters.

While I see your point, the problem with Thor is that despite the disability he was saddled with, all he had to do was stamp his cane on the ground and he instantly shed the lame leg and got his divine-born powers in full force. The biggest obstacle that his bad leg posed to him was keeping him from hooking up with Jane Foster while in his human form, but she wanted the hunky guy he transformed into, so it wasn't like it kept him from what he wanted anyway. Oh, and at #105 on my "top origins" list is Pip the Troll. Just FYI...

But what distinguishes him from the dozens upon dozens of playboy vigilante types in the '30s? Robin, and Bill Finger's love of German Expressionism?

There were literally dozens of characters in both comics and pulps who shared Batman's origin and motivation. Hell, he wasn't even the first mystery man to dress as a bat. But something about Kane and Finger's take on it grabbed kids' imagination in a way few of the others did. It was the right combination of talents working for the right publisher at the right time.
Cei-U! I summon the recipe for success!

I bow to your superior knowledge of the genre but of all the Golden Age Heroes I read ( Mr. Terrific, Hourman, Wildcat etc) They never had the relentless drive to eliminate all criminals like Bats did.

Joe Jusko posted this, Frazetta does a humorous take on Tarzan far Mad, signed by the late great Johnny Weissmuller... Frazetta's humorous material is often overlooked, but hehad a knack for it as well as for the adventure stuff. -M

Remember that time Jack Kirby's wife fought the Nazis? The Boy Commandos got to ride into combat a new Flying Fortress bomber called "Rosalind K." The pilot and co-pilot both died under enemy fire, so the Boy Commandos had to bail out. But the unmanned bomber bravely completed her mission dive-bombing a tunnel that was crucial to the enemy supply lines. Whatta gal!
