Mother Oats Comix 1969 Dave Sheridan and his Dealer McDope strip. Assisted by a P. Schrier. Interesting how the humorous stories veer off into some mind-bending imagery. Ish, is there any chance that that's "F. Schrier"? My Balloon Vendor comic features Fred Schrier and Dave Sheridan. Your absolutely correct. I must have spaced out for a moment.

New Paltz Comics -hey I used to hang around there, visiting my friend at the college on weekends in the early 70s. Had the reputation back then as the best party college on the east coast
A couple of years ago, we were talking at a work lunch about where we went to college. One of my co-workers said she went to New paltz and we all spontaneously said "Hippie School!" I started re-reading some undergrounds and found these gags in Bicentennial Gross-Outs that I thought would be of interest to people here: Attachments:

Obviously and justifiably Vaughn Bode has showed up several times here on this great thread, but am I the only one, with an interest in the undergrounds, or otherwise, who really doesn't care for his art? His squashed and "smushed" panel and figure work I find a little inscrutable. Larger panels might have helped, but I'm likely being a philistine, even with the profession that any of this is high art contains it's own inherent betrayal of the principle, whatever that be. I wasn't a big fan until I saw his work in color, and then when I got to see his Cartoon Concert in '74 or '75. The reason's his panels may have seen "smushed" is that he kept balloons out of the panels so he could take slides of the images w/o words. He'd perform his concerts showing the images and doing the voices and sound effects himself. I haven't watched this whole thing yet, but it'll give you an idea:

The reason's his panels may have seen "smushed" is that he kept balloons out of the panels so he could take slides of the images w/o words. He'd perform his concerts showing the images and doing the voices and sound effects himself. That was pretty interesting Marty. He does some good voices, and he might have had a side career in animation and voice over had he not died so soon. Here are a few of Bode's sci-fi covers. You can see both the range of styles he was capable of as well as the similarities to his comix work. I think Larry Todd assisted on some of these

I've got a near complete run of Slow Death, and maybe a half run of Skull Comics. I think Slow Death actually began life as Slow Death Funnies. The underground boys sure liked their Wally Wood, as witnessed by that cover to SD #6. Wood, being a kind of father of the underground movement, was really a mentor to these guys, spiritually if not actually, as several served as assistants to the master (see MDG's great lighthearted spoof above). Spain did a nice tribute to Wally upon the latter's death

Here is another fun before and after thing, from straight to hippie if you will, I found in Mark James Estron's History of Underground Comics (yes, without the X, a democratic move I rather like... it's all one ball of wax after all)

The G's: Good Jive - all by Richard "Grass" Green, and classier than the covers imply. Greaser - Adventures in the 1950s "greaser" subculture. A LOT more violent, erotic, and realistic than that musical with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. #1 is mostly by George DiCaprio; #2 has DiCaprio scripting with Jim Janes handling the art. Grim Wit - #1 is all Corben; #2 has 10 pages by Jaxon; the rest is mostly Corben and features the first appearance of his character Den. Grateful Dead - a seven-issue early 1990s series that I picked up fairly recently. I'm missing #6. Most stories are adaptations of Dead song lyrics by underground-type artists. I don't have the comix handy so the limited credits are from the GCD and a few other places. #1 - cover by Dean Armstrong, Casey Jones by Nina Paley, Terrapin Station by Dan Steffen, Dire Wolf by Tim Truman and One More Saturday Night by Fred Carlson. #2 - cover by Rand Holmes, more Terrapin Station by Dan Steffen, The Lille Story by Rand Holmes, Cumberland Blues by Tim Truman and Friend of the Devil by Frank Gresham. #3 - cover by Tim Truman, Sugaree, Tennessee Jed, Golden Road, and Red Rocks. #4 - cover by Shelton/Mavrides, Truckin' by Nina Paley, Mexicali Blues by Pat Redding, Jack Straw by Tim Truman and St. Stephen by Mary Fleener. #5 - cover by Dean Armstrong, Head Deadhead, The Dead in Milwaukee, Woodstock, and Uncle John's Band. #7 - cover by William Stout, Alligator by Dan Burr, Scarlet Begonias by Terry Laban, Playin' in the Band by Chris O'Leary and Eagle Mall part 2 by Tim Truman. Bonus: an interview with Tim Truman on the Dead's website: www.dead.net/features/all-family/all-family-tim-truman
