First the cover. Gorrl looks like Alan Moore! Inside Moore describes what flying at faster than light speeds must feel like. It was great. Then later he describes Supreme's senses. "The Supremium isotopes in Sally's tissues call to those in mine, enabling me to track her thru Gorrl's trackless waste. Senses Supreme. It is probably a halfway accurate description of how my perceptions work. In actuality I have no literal telescopic sight, no micro sight or hyper hearing. Instead I expand my consciousness and senses far beyond myself. I see. I hear. I know."
Moore also explains how his heat vision works. "Focusing I let some surplus energy flow from my brain to optic nerve to retina...". The last page has Suprema worried the Earth has forgotten her in her 30 yrs absence. But Supreme thinks she was worried for nothing. "She's special. She's Suprema. The Maid of Might. The Lass of Laurels. The Girl of our Dreams."

Supreme has gone to Star City to Kendall Manor. There Ethan is greeted by Pratap. Taylor Kendall's butler since the 50's. He requests Supreme's aid in helping Taylor & Linda, Prof Night & Twilight, The Darktown Duo. They ride the Sinking Salon down to the Halls of Night where Pratap shows Ethan the comatose bodies of Night & Twilight. They are neither alive nor dead. They have not aged since 1970 when they returned from a visit with Brice Bristow (The Fisherman) & Toby King (Skipper). They immediately searched their Night Files & collapsed an hour later. Then we flashback to an adventure when Darius Dax & Jack-A-Dandy team up & switch Supreme & Prof Night's minds into each others bodies. Supreme can't adjust to having no powers & Night doesn't know how to control Supreme's powers. Needless to say Twilight comes up with a plan to trick Dax & Jack into switching them back. It works & Twilight does the same thing to Dax & Jack. Back in the present Supreme retrieves his Ideo-Spatial Imaging Helmet from the Citadel & returns to Kendall Manor to enter Night's mind & soul. He discovers Night's soul is gone. Supreme accesses the Night Files & finds the last entry in 1970 was Hulver Damik the Slaver Of Souls. Damik was an enemy of the 60's Allies. Supreme then takes off a week from work at Dazzle Comics & asks the Allies to help him retrieve Prof Night & Twilights souls from Damik. Next: The Return of The Allies! |

Moore focuses on the World's (Finest) Greatest team this issue before bringing in the Allies (JLA) for the next 2 issues. I love the nick names this issue. Dax the Einstein of Evil. Jack the Foppish Felon. Prof Night the Dean of Darkness. Twilight the Girl Marvel. Supreme the Platinum Paragon.
I also noticed Damik's name changes to Ramik next issue.
#46 (Suprema) & 47 (Prof Night) were my 2 favorite issues of this arc. I realize it is because Moore has been telling the history of Superman thru the decades & has moved from the early/mid 50's to the late 50's/early 60's. Which is the era when I was first started reading Superman/Superboy/Supergirl/World's Finest....

While the Supreme robots prepare the equipment to send them into Thought Space they remember their first case against Florax (think Starro as giant plant). As they travel thru Thought Space they recall the first time they fought Hulver Ramik (think Kang as Rama-Tut). As they fight nightmarish creatures they recall their time travel adventure when the Allies met their past selves as the Allied Supermen of America. They discover Ramik's slave compound & Supreme scans it with his Supreme Sight. He discovers all the heroes from the 60's that are missing are being held. As they go in they recall other cases like when the Fisherman joined the Allies & when they were turned to stone or painted out of existence. They fight their way inside & come face to face with Ramik. He confesses it was easy to entrap the heroes when Supreme left to go into space in the early 70's & the Allies disbanded. Ramik tells them someone more powerful than him planned this. The Allies turn & face a bright light...the super villain Optilux. |

Optilux is Brainiac only instead of shrinking cities he converts them & the people into pure light energy. This issue was different than the rest. Instead of a flashback story there was several random pages recreating JLA covers with the Moore Supreme twist. Moore has so may characters in the story this issue & next that I can't list them all:
Glory. Diehard. Super-Patriot. Mighty Man. Mer-Master. Jack O'Lantern. Professor Night. Spacehunter. Fisherman. Skipper. Stormbirds. Polyman. Mark Tyme. Conquerors of the Uncanny.
This issue & the next issue are a celebration of the big blockbuster JLA issues that featured a big cast of heroes doing the impossible.

In the flashback we find out Sally Crane attends Glenvale High School. I think that's a subtle reference to Glenville High in Cleveland, where Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster met. |

The conclusion of the Allies Big Fight with Optilux.
The Allies attempt to stop Optilux from his plans to turn all life into light energy. As they fight Supreme & Glory are separated from the rest of the Allies in a Mind Maze. Glory asks about Optilux. Supreme recounts that Optilux's apparent demise led to him going into space back in the early 70's...
Veitch does the flashback art in a Neal Adams style. Supreme leaves Earth in the care of Suprema & Radar in 1971. His parents have died. Judy Jordan has become a fighter for women's rights. Even Dax has died of cancer & Optilux committed suicide. As Supreme approaches the Doorway to Understanding (the answers to time, God, death, existence) an old friend Jack O'Lantern blocks the way. Supreme fights Jack & pushes thru the Barrier into the Abyss of Existence. This causes Supreme's amnesia & 20 years of recovery. Supreme briefly recounts those years including time spent on a false earth (issues #1-40).
Back in the present Glory states the 70's (had to be relevant) & 80's (depressing) were a good time to be away. They discover a way to escape the Mind Maze & in the process free everyone. All of them try to fight Optilux. Ramik escapes during the confusion. Glory comments that there has not been this many heroes in one place since the wedding of Doc Rocket & Alleycat. Supreme tricks Optilux into a multi facted crystal trapping him since his light will rebound inside forever.
All the heroes return to their comatose bodies scattered in different places: Conqueror Island. Stormbird Mountain. Halls of Night. The Citadel.
Supreme thanks the Allies for their help & they all disperse. Suprema tells him about some messages from Diana & Supreme thanks her & immediately leaves. Radar comments to Suprema that Supreme "has fallen in heat".

I did not know that. This story arc is packed with subtle & not so subtle references to Superman. I discover more each time I re-read this story. |

Wow. In addition to this being a "love letter" to the Silver Age Superman this is becoming bigger. It has become a homage to DC's Silver Age. This issue references the Challengers of the Unknown & the Blackhawks.
We are approaching the final act as Moore pulls a lot of sub plots together. I am going to include the 3 Youngblood issues that Moore wrote to show the things that he used here to set up an all new Awesome universe.

Interlude: Script by Alan Moore. Art & cover by Steve Skroce & Lary Stucker. The story starts in a government facility with something called The Azure possessing soldiers & causing them to kill others. In Star City (Prof Night's city) Twilight (again Prof Night's sidekick) calls in an incident to Shaft (leader of Youngblood). The Azure is the incident & Twilight becomes possessed. The granddaughter of Doc Rocket (from the Allied Supermen) goes in to stop her. The rest of the Youngblood team assembles to assist. Meanwhile Suprema! returns from Jupiter & becomes possessed by Twilight. The rest of team arrives to try & stop Suprema. Twilight states she has known Suprema since the 60's & does not think they can stop her. The Azure is an alien parasite looking for the strongest host it can find. Johnny Panic uses holograms to shapeshift & becomes Supreme. He convinces the Azure to transfer into him. When it does Shaft stuns Johnny. Major Blake Baron (from Agent America/Fighting American) shows up & transfers the Azure into a monkey imprisoned in a box & leaves. As you can see the first issue of Moore's Youngblood takes a lot of cues from Supreme #46 & 47 in building a cohesive Awesome Universe.

Ethan comes over to discuss their upcoming work on Omniman Comics. She asks about romance in hero comics & Ethan talks about Supreme's use of a computer in the Citadel to see what marriage would be like (similar to the old Imaginary stories back in the 50's & 60's). He called them "Experiments". In the first scenario he marries Judy Jordan & becomes a henpecked husband in the 50's. In the second scenario he marries an angel Luriel & she finds out she can't live for an extended time outside of her dimension & she dies. In the third scenario he marries Glory & their arguments carry over into their heroic lives to the detriment of earth. Ethan had come over to tell Diana his feelings for her but after talking about Supreme's Experiments he decides not to tell her. Meanwhile at Judy's house her granddaughter Hilda draws Judy a picture of Supreme's Citadel - a detailed blueprint. Judy tells her to get her coat. They are going visiting. |

This issue sets up the final act. First it celebrates the Imaginary stories in DC Comics in the 50's & 60's. Next it sets up the fact that all of the other heroes are now back. It also serves as a brief respite before the finale in the next 2 issues.
The rest of the double sized issue was filled with pinups by Dan Jurgens. Ian Churchill. Adam Pollina. Rob Liefeld. Ed McGuinness. J. Morrigan. Jeff Matsuda. Brian Murray. Chris Sprouse. Melinda Gebbie. Rick Veitch. Stephen Platt.

He is in a cybernetic outfit & calls himself Cyberzerk. After Supreme rescues Diana she asks about his enemies. He recalls a date with Judy when he took her to a Supreme themed amusement park. They pass thru his Rogues Roster. Stupendo the Simian Supreme. Darius Dax. Emerpus. Korgo the Space Tyrant. Szazs the Sprite Supreme. Optilux. The Televillain. The Supremium Man. The Master Meteor. Shadow Supreme. Meanwhile Hilda hugs Judy real tight & ignites her shoe rockets (what?) & flies the two of them to the Citadel. Hilda quickly dismantles Supreme's robots. When Supreme returns to his Citadel he finds Hilda. She tricks him & Judy flips the switch imprisoning Supreme in his Mirror Penitentiary with his enemies. He pleads to be set free because he has no powers there. He pleads to Judy who replies "Judy is not who is talking". Then the next issue blurb: The Return of Darius Dax! |

Wow what a twist. I knew Judy & Hilda were a little creepy but I couldn't wait to see how Judy & Dax were one & the same.
Moore wanted the conclusion to be an 80 page Giant like DC used to publish back in the 60's. However it was split into two 40 page issues 52A & 52B.
In addition to the main story 52A had back ups. Squeak the Super Mouse with art by Kevin O'Neill. Suprema with art by Jim Mooney. And some pin ups.
52B had back up of Prof Night with Rick Veitch art. More pin ups.

Interlude 2: Script by Alan Moore. Art & cover by Steve Skroce and Lary Stucker. The first page shows a figure in shadow looking at pictures of villains. He is planning on assembling a new Youngblood team. Then we see Suprema & Twilight taking down a motorcycle gang in Omegapolis. They are confronted & captured by Satana (Suprema villain) & the Lounge Lizard (Prof Night villain). Then Doc Rocket & Johnny Panic are at the mansion HQ & are confronted & captured by Speedwell (has superspeed) & Poppy (slows people down & makes them fall asleep). Shaft & Big Brother return from Coast City & find the mansion grounds torn up. Sentinel (original leader of Youngblood) attacks them helped by Atomo (an old fashioned Marvel Atlas era monster). Sentinel was imprisoned in Supreme's Mirror Penitentiary for the murder of Riptide in the mini series Judgment Day by Moore. Shaft & Big Brother are overcome. Later Youngblood wakes up hanging on the wall of the mansion. Waxman (Waxey Doyle from the 40's) who is financing Youngblood comes in & distracts the villains. Waxman is a homage to Sandman. The team of Youngblood get free & attack the villains. All the villains escape except the Lounge Lizard who is caught by Waxman. The last page shows the Lounge Lizard telling the story to the shadowed figure from the first page...Jack-A-Dandy (Prof Night's enemy)! Again a lot of the concepts come from Supreme #46 & 47. This incarnation of Youngblood was fun!
