I've thought about this for a while, and I am finally going to take the plunge on my first review thread, in which I am going to tackle the entirety of the Captain America series since 1961, starting with his first solo appearance in Tales of Suspense #59. It's ambitious and a little daunting, which is why I've put it off as long as I have.
Why Captain America? As some of you know, I completed a complete run of the Captain America series (not counting ToS) about two years ago, and this has become the pride of my collection. I didn't grow up reading Cap, so most of this collecting was done long after these books were in the back issue bins; I only started buying Cap on a regular basis shortly before his "death" at the hands of Ed Brubaker. As I review these books, I will be reading many of these issues for the first (or second, for a few of them) time.
A few notes: 1. I'm not even a passable artist, to the point that I actually draw fat stick figures. That said, I can't comment on whether an inker's lines are too thick or who the colorist was or any of the other things that comic art aficionados can pick out just by glancing at a page. 2. I'm going to be focusing mainly on the storylines and the continuity of the series, looking at how the characters and events develop. As a former history teacher, I am also going to pay attention to the current events of the time the books were published and how they impacted the series. 3. I'm going to be keeping track of first appearances, continuity goofs, and embarrassing or headscratcher moments. 4. The reviews are going to focus on the Captain America series itself, as I pondered doing a side-by-side review thread with Avengers to ensure that I did not miss anything continuity-wise. That seemed to be too much, so I welcome folks to comment and let me know where I may have missed something or if I call something out incorrectly. 5. I am going to try to post a minimum of one review per week, although I am really hoping to average at least two for the foreseeable future.
Wish me luck, and I look forward to your feedback and contributions to the thread.

Cool. I've read every issue of Captain America (vol 2.) except for Tales of Suspense 21-36. (But not the annuals or specials.) BUT this was 12 years ago, so we'll see how little I remember.

Need to mention this to start off A trial balloon for Cap's appeal even though it turned out to be an impostor named The Acrobat

And Tales of Suspense #58, where he guest-starred in the Iron Man story! (The Kraven the Hunter cameo is HILARIOUS!)

Wow! That's a huge image. But it's perfectly appropriate for illustrating the impact that Captain America's return heralded for readers of the time. Stan and Jack handled the sketchy history of the Captain so deftly, playing up his best qualities while wisely ignoring the excesses imposed upon the character during his long run at Timely.
Best. Re-introduction. Ever.

Need to mention this to start off A trial balloon for Cap's appeal even though it turned out to be an impostor named The Acrobat Johnny, you've already got Namor for an enemy and now you're fighting Cap. Goodness knows what's going to happen when the android Torch gets a hold of you for taking his name.

I'm really looking forward to this thread. I used to have every issue of Tales of Suspense. I love the monster stories in the early issues, the Iron Man series, the Watcher and then Cap.
As a matter of fact, it's my favorite run on Captain America, from about #72 to #99 and then the first few issues of his new series with the Red Skull and the Exiles. My favorite Captain America story of all time is the one with the Red Skull and the Cosmic Cube, I think it's Tales of Suspense #78 to #81. (And the Iron Man feature is great at the same time! Tales of Suspense #75 to #95 is non-stop Silver Age super-hero action of the highest caliber.)

I bought the Cap series off the newstands and read them all from the start of the Tales of Suspense run up through Steve Englehart's stories. Skipped everything else after until Brubaker took it over

Cap is one of the stronger series in the 60's. Will you be reading these from the original comics, online or with collections like the Marvel Masterwork's series?

Just over a month ago, I reread a bunch of Captain America stories in an attempt to assemble a "Best Captain America stories" list. I ran out of time and read less than I meant to. But I got through the first couple dozen issues of Tales of Suspense, then assorted stories from the main series, the Steranko stuff, the Secret Empire, the beginning of the Stern/Byrne run, etc.
I had a quite good time and will chime in with thoughts, if I find myself able to remember details of things I read 6 weeks ago (HINT: I often can't)

I don't remember if I have the 1st 1 or 2 MMWs... but I remember 'The Sleeper Awakes' being amazing... that was pretty early on. I've got some Cap & Falcon trades I got not too long ago I'll definitely save until Richard gets to them
