Thank you for this kind honor of hosting the next cover contest. I thought Sandman's gas gun had no chance in a "best superhero with a gun" competition, but it's a cool cover, featuring a simple and ingenious gun. Thanks again!
So for this week's theme in honor of Fourth of July, how about we go with Best Explosions! Show us your favorite covers featuring giant explosions, or lots of fire, even fireworks if you can find them. Because everyone loves to blow things up on the 4th!
As usual, the rules as follows:
Contest Rules
-Post one, and only one, classic cover that fits the theme of the contest.
-Cover must be from a published comic book or collected volume published before Jan 1 2004 (this is a classics comic forum and we voted 10 years as the unofficial standard for being a classic).
-Covers must be posted before voting begins.
-Voting runs from 12 AM PST Tuesday until 12 AM Wednesday PST.
-Vote by posting the name of the poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most.
Put the name in bold.
-The winner of the contest is the entrant with the most votes after the voting period ends.
The winner chooses the theme for the next week's contest.
-If you don't think the cover fits the theme, don't vote for it, don't post disparaging remarks about it. If a cover is more recent that the Classic time frame, kindly point it out and the poster can choose an alternate before voting begins.
-Have fun!

I need to up my game. I've either lost a tie breaker or finished one vote behind three or four times now. Time to step it up.

No idea what's exploding here, but I still love it.

I've always admired how well this one was done.

I'm going with the "lots of fire" sub-theme.

More than a few heroes got their powers in situations involving explosions.

I've whittled down my choices to about a dozen, but something is driving me crazy that I have to try to settle first.
It's only tangential to the contest topic, but my obsessive side is taking over and I need to see / find this....
I have searched high and low for a Jack Kirby cover (explosion less) that pictures in extreme close-up a helmeted soldier with a large bandage on his eye, and a cigarette in his mouth, too. I thought it was a cover for Battlefront or another similar 50s comic (like Battle, War, Battleground, etc.), but damned if I can find anything close to it. (Though I've found a ton of other outstanding Kirby and non-Kirby covers.) It's a pretty brutal image for its time, and I know I've seen it used as an example of the greatness of Kirby (as if any more evidence is called for).
I know I've seen this plenty of times, and perhaps it's a splash page, not a cover, but does it ring a bell with anyone?
I summon the "D'oh!" revelation, I hope.

Can you believe this is the only cover (I could find anyway) that has Marvel's greatest explosive villain actually exploding? I am just very happy it features Mar-Vel!
