That's absolutely meaningless without knowing what the projected revenues were. It also doesn't say whether it constitutes a loss or simply a failure to meet expectations, but that they still posted a profit.
And honestly, in the big scheme of things, $2 million is a drop in the bucket to Time-Warner.

According to this site, DC averages $32 million net revenue a year, so $2 million is a 6% loss in revenue. Not end of the world, but alarming to Warner. I assume, from how the Bleeding Cool report is worded, that this is $2 million less than expected even with factoring in moving expenses. So it's not a $2 million loss, it's $2 million more lost than anticipated. |

And I read it as $2 million less than the expected revenue for the year. Which means if they projected, say, a $5 million profit then the profit is only $3 million. I'm not saying that's what it is. I'm really just saying that it's poor reporting because there simply isn't enough info to be able to tell what that number means.

I agree that the information is very sparse. My point is only that I assume they were already expecting to make less this year due to major anticipated costs involved in the move, and thus they still came in 2 million lower than that already lower number.

It's Bleeding Cool, so grain of salt and all that, but reports of changes at DC because of fiscal problems are beginning to surface... Austerity Regime at DCcancellations, price increases, lower page rates to creators, more ads, more licensed specialty comics, and it looks like Didio is back in charge of it all again. DC Sales for July 2015Just posted over at The Beat today. The unique thing is that Batgirl could be used as a "control group" to show the effect of returnability and variant covers since it had neither in the last two months. As the announcer on Batman used to say "but wait, the worst is yet to come!"

I just read the article over at The Beat regarding variants at Marvel. I guess the most important person working at a comic book company these days is the guy choosing the variant cover theme.

However the result of the failure to launch of the DCYou was that Didio was the main voice against it, and it went down as he predicted it would but no one listened then, so he now has everyone's ear again and seems to be the lead voice in the room again, and this time there may not be the same constraints on him that kept some of his more excessive ideas in check...i.e. no one like Johns is there saying he shouldn't/can't do some of the things he wanted to do in the past and other new ideas he has been pushing without success recently. So Didio may have had his day, but that day is Groundhog Day and it's starting again. -M |

There were lots of things leading up to, during and after Infinite Crisis that he was pushing for that got shot down, same thing with the new52 launch, etc. etc. There are things he wanted to do with certain characters, books, etc. he had pushed for that got vetoed, there are ways of producing books (he comes from a television soap opera background and has always favored the concept of a writer's room for plotting and planning books then having a writer assigned to execute what the room decided rather than individual writer on books making decisions which in the past has lead to some editorial interference with some writers who see things differently than the brain trust, now who knows) that he has been unable to implement because it goes against the grain of the way its been done for a while so he hasn't been able to implement those, etc. etc. etc. He has certainly had a lot of influence, but he has not had free reign to do things as he sees fit always. Looks like part of the revenue crisis is that evergreen trade sales are down in a big way. In the first 6 months of 2015, Watchmen trades move a total of units equal to what DC used to move in a month prior to the Watchmen movie. Trade sales for Dark Knight Returns and Year One are down after the animated releases as well. Vertigo trades have cooled and series like Preacher and Sandman that used to have all their volumes perpetually in the top 300 of trades now only have the first volume cracking the top 300. Unlike Marvel, DC had a healthy evergreen trade market, but over the past few years, it hasn't been so green and that has caused bigger revenue shortfalls than dips in the monthly sales of floppies. A former bean counter said that the success of the movie and film projects of evergreen products gives them a short boost but cannibalizes long term sales. He also said Image is the new Vertigo with long term success of entire series of trades becoming evergreen. Walking Dead seems to be the exception to film cannibalizing the books, and it is following more the George Martin Game of Thrones model where the show is driving people to the books who want more, but that is because both the shows are ongoings unlike feature films that are self-contained. gleaned from this BC article-M |
