"Mailed Flat" was meaningless. Because once the books left the mailer they were at the mercy of the post office. And I never got a subscription comic that wasn't folded in half. And a number of them looked like they'd been through a gristmill. Still better condition than anything in a slab. Oops, wrong thread.

Ha, a slabbed book might be in better condition but you'll never know for sure.

Have you ever tried walking on ice? Imagine if your feet were coated with ice and you tried to walk. Boots were a practical way to give him traction so he didn't slip and fall every time he took a step. They just didn't look very heroic, so got abandoned after a handful of issues. -M

Only problem with that was, as they refined the look, his boots were iced over. So, he would have had to have created some kind of rough surface on the soles, for traction, or left them uncovered, which isn't the way artists drew it.
This is one of those, "'cause, comics!" situations. Why does Donald Duck have a shirt; but, no pants? Why is Goofy a person; but, Pluto is a pet, when both are obviously dogs? 'Cause, Disney!
I think a more practical reason was that it helped to track the character on the page, as much as anything.

I didn't want to derail the contest thread by extending the conversation there, but: is there a story behind why Severin never worked for Mad after Kurtzman left? Davis returned after doing work for both Sick and Cracked, and Kurtzman and Elder even did some work in the 80s.

From The Comics Journal interview with Severin, it sounds like he didn't enjoy working for Feldstein: TCJ Severin

I doubt the money was better, given Cracked was never as big as Mad. I know he had a falling out with Harvey, at EC; but, don't know if there was heat with Gaines, too. Maybe it was freedom to do what he wanted, at Cracked, vs Mad.

Okay, how does Superman get a haircut?
I recall an episode of Superman TAS where he uses his heat vision via the bathroom mirror to shave. This grooming question came to me after reading Superman Family #195. In the Clark Kent story by Conway, it's referenced that Superman's hair can't even grow under our yellow sun. Why is that a plot point? Because a former gossip columnist for the Daily Planet (now working for a rival network) thinks she's stumbled across the scoop of the year when she discovers that Clark's hair never grows, not even a millimeter over time. Thus he must be bald for he wears a toupee/hair piece!
Of course, this ties in with the police asking for Clark's help in nabbing Luthor's top 2 lieutenants by impersonating an imprisoned Luthor because wouldn't you know it, Clark (sans hair) resembles the bald Luthor quite a bit.
Anyway, if his hair is as indestructible as every other body part (assuming it can grow right??) then how does he trim it? And how has Lois never keened onto this small personal detail as well?
I know, useless factoids but it's amazing what springs to mind after late night comic reading....

Krypto's teeth contain the strength to cut the hair and his saliva contain an enzyme that slows the regeneration of the hair follicles.

Can't remember where I read it but I seem to recall someone somewhere saying Big Blue went to a Kandorian barber on those rare occasions that he needed a trim (of course, this raises the question of how he managed before rescuing Kandor from Brainiac).
Cei-U! I summon the shears!
