James Robinson's JSA revival, with the bookended collection of titles (all Golden Age titles) was outstanding, using Steve Ditko's old Stalker character, from DC's sword & sorcery debacle, of the 70s (Warlord was the only one to last). Robinson really knew how to tap into nostalgia; but, do something fresh with the characters. He was the one who turned Mr Terrific into a character who was something other than another playboy-turned-superhero, in a goofy costume. He really seemed to be able to tap into the essence of classic characters. LOEG continued to delight and dazzle, and send you to the library, for the references. Thank heavens for Jess Nevins and his annotations! Vader's Quest was one of the better Star Wars books, centering on Vader searching for the identity of the pilot who destroyed the Death Star. Marvel had something similar, under Archie Goodwin; but, not quite the same angle. It's one of the later ones I would stand up to Archie's stuff. Astro City continued a classic arc and Starman had Robinson restoring Adam Strange to glory. Like I said; essence! I had the promotional poster for the JSA Returns mini, which was, essentially, the All-Star Comics #1 cover, minus the masthead.

This was also the month that Phantom Menace was unleashed upon our unsuspecting and soon-to-be-disappointed heads. I was working for B&N and we got a ton of crap for the films, including the same novelization, in multiple covers: all of which, within 90 days, would be replaced by the Darth Maul cover. Some fools actually bought all of them. Sad to see the collector mentality in the book world. We had these display units, from DK, for all of their sticker album and sundry books, for kids. One had Artoo, the other a battle droid (or that one that Anakin bops on the head; memory is fuzzy) They had a billion parts and were a nightmare to put together. My interest in most comics was definitely waning. I know I was getting indie titles in this timeframe; but, am not sure what. I was also starting to just pick up trades, on some things. Starman and Astro City, plus the odd Hellboy and the ABC books helped keep me going. Incredible Hulk vs Superman had The Dude (the original, not the Cohen Bros. one), which made it a must, when some of the other C/Marvel crossovers didn't make the cut. The Tarzan book features Russ Manning's gorgeous Tarzan work. I gave Stars & STRIPE a try, based on Starman and that Justice Society Returns mini, from March.

May 1999. I was living in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and had access to a great LCS. I'm actually surprised to see how few comics I bought that month... I was under the impression that I purchased tons of comics in those days. Maybe many of them were from the dollar bins!
Cerebus #242 : Dave Sim's editorial pages in Going Home might have been a chore to read, but the storyline and his artwork were splendid. Dave Sim also got me to read F. Scott Fitzgerald, so props to him!
The story is a pretty accurate rendition of dysfunctional human relations. Jaka is in love with Cerebus, but dreams of an unaccessible life in the arts; Cerebus loves her too, but is jealous, insecure, and a boor to boot; Kennedy is in love with Jaka as well, because she represents everything that he is not but would like to be... and he is certainly closer to her, in terms of interests and education, than the little grey dude. The trio's slow boat trip is a good example of decompressed storytelling done right.
Heart of Empire #2 : Not as innovative as its precursor, The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, but a lot of fun nevertheless... and the art is gorgeous. It is like a love letter to Michael Moorcock's fiction.
Hellblazer # 139 : I thoroughly hated the first Warren Ellis arc on the title, but his stand alone stories are pretty good.
Preacher #51 : Another great character-based issue, after Tulip treats Cassidy the way he deserves. Her memories of her dad are very moving... and it's touching to see this man's man start by being an absolute sexist jock and end up being the best father a girl could have, despite all the hard knocks that life throws at him (including a most inglorious death). Preacher was constantly putting the lie to the idea that it was merely a very violent comic full of profanity. Oh, sure, it was a violent comic full of profanity... but there was a method to its madness! It used its genre to tell engaging stories about multilayered people and was simultaneously a funny indictment of society and human nature, and a celebration of them both.

Astro City continues the Tarnished Angel storyline, Starman is still in space, Alan Moore continues to delight, with Tom Strong and debuts Promethea; James Robinson launches a new JSA title (with David Goyer), on the heels of the multi-book JSA Returns series. get ready for some rolling back of bad DC revamps to get to a modern, yet classic JSA line-up (set after Starman returns home, or just before he leaves; I can't remember). Star Girl gets her debut in Stars and STRIPE, where Stripesy gets a robot battle suit. At the cinema, Austin powers gets a sequel, South Park gets a film, Barry Sonenfeld makes a has of the Wild Wild West and some space movie "prequel" is out. For comic books, we have to wait a couple of months, for Mystery Men (which I thought was an awesome film!). There was some movie with a lot of fetish clothing and Keanau Reeves standing around, going, "Whoa....!" that was still in theaters. Something about Trix cereal, or something? Oh, yeah; and the greatest Ultron story ever!

July 1999 Several in here I think will need to be pulled out of their box to read again since I haven't read any again since purchasing them. Feeling some Thor and Hitman desire to re-read. Maybe combining my A-Next and J2 into a pile for some quick and fun reads to breaking up my "heavier" current reads.
