For those of you who ever picked up extra copies of a book thinking one day, maybe it might have been a good idea, what did you choose? Thanks to Scott Harris's mention of the existence of this...I got one two....3 copies... very hard to come by...Apparently, 300 copies exist. And with the news that Rat Queens is going to be made into a tv show, the price of the regular variant has tripled literally overnight. io9.com/rat-queens-is-going-to-be-a-tv-show-1590960721Now don't get me wrong...after discovering this series from Cold Water, it's now on my pull list and I don't mind getting the rarer copies as well. So who bought boatloads of X-Force #1? Post your goldmines or cesspools here...

I have never bought more than 1 copy of any comic.I have never slabbed a book. But I have spent big sums of money to complete collections.I've spent over a thousand a few times for a book.I justified it knowing I could at least get my money back if I sold it and maybe a bit more. But the profit was never the reason I bought it in the first place. I had a mania for complete runs

I've never speculated on any books, but I have been known to buy back issues that are woefully underpriced by unknowing comic book shop owners and turning them around for a tidy profit on eBay.

I have to confess that I bought 6 copies of the black bag Superman #75. I kept one and sold 5 for 6 bucks each. Yeah, I sold too quickly.

Not really. When I was a kid I bought a couple Wizard magazines and went through my collection, adding up it's value. I thought I could sell it off when I got older and make out like a bandit, but I was still only buying comics I wanted to read, still read them all, and wasn't buying multiples of anything.
I have sold some comics for profit, but the one that comes to mind first is a comic I never thought I'd sell. I showed it off online and started getting offers for it. I'd politely turn them down but the offers got larger and larger, and after about a 700% return on what at the time was the most expensive comic I ever bought I decided to go for it. I don't like the idea of owning comics with four figure pricetags anyway.
I bought a collection and flipped it once. Just for something to do. It was fun but also hard work. It was about ten longboxes worth. I would do it again though.
My pull list is maybe 1.5 comics per month, I have no time to inflate the sales of mainstream garbage hoping I can make a quick $10 off some sucker.

As far as Rat Queens being made into a TV show, you might not want to hold your breath. I have Deadworld scripts from the 90's for a movie that never happened. I've heard of Dead@17 being "in development" for a decade. They even had a cast at one point years back. There has been talk of an Elfquest movie since before I was born, and hardly a year goes by without another movie announcement.

But after selling off the first 3-5 issues of a new series for a slight profit on a handful of occasions, I'm not quite as hesitant to check a new series out. Also, I continue to buy Walking Dead floppies (my only monthly pull) because I know when the next compendium comes out I can sell these floppies for at the very least my money back, if not a profit.

I bought a lot of stuff over the years and it's hard to know what you have. I didn't know that I had the first appearance of Hellboy until a few days ago. But it was totally unplanned, who can know when an obscure character will take off?

As a young child I think every book was speculative: I assumed they would all be worth more and more as time went by. I assumed that they would be collected, reprinted, or whatever, and my original copies would one day be sold on at a profit. For example, I loved the Badtime Bedtime books (pull-out 8 page mini comics) and could see that they were the perfect size for reprinting in a paperback, or just putting all of them in one comic. So I vaguely assumed that one day I would have that better version and would then get rid of my original copies. But I did this based purely on the love of reading: I did not care for the condition of a comic, and assumed that other people were the same. Indeed, signs of being loved made them more valuable to me if anything (rolled up, dog-eared, even the occasional pen mark or cut out coupon, as long as an ad was on the other side). Like many kids, I tried gluing, hole punching, etc., to make comics easier to read: I thought I was doing future generations a favour. I knew that old stuff tends to be more expensive, so vaguely thought I would make a profit, or at least it would subsidise later purchases. As far as speculating, I suppose that's what I was doing when I bought comics in large quantities at jumble sales: I knew it was unlikely I would ever get the time to read every page, but I also knew I would then be free to find strips I liked later and if needed sell the rest. Of course, I ended up with piles of comics that nobody else wanted, and the few exceptions had little value to any dealers. It seems I misjudged the speculator market completely.

I bought 34 copies of NFL Superpro in honor of the great Walter Payton back in 93. I lost all of them (including a complete set of Ewok's from the old Star line) when my cat at the time decided to have a litter of kittens in a comic box I forgot to put the lid back on. Oh the humanity...

Great pickup, Jez Back in the late 80's, I got pretty good at deducing which back issues were likely to get hot. I made some pretty sizable profit from some of them, the highlight of which was a really sharp copy of Batman #171 I bought for $20 and ended up trading for a VF ASM #39 and a NM ASM #40 (both of which I later traded for a F/VF Avengers #7 and a VF+ Avengers #8). When the 90's started, though, I briefly got caught up in the craze of speculating on new issues and that didn't go any better for me than it did for anyone else. The real shame is that a lot of the back issues I was looking for in the late 80's to speculate on ended up becoming really huge, only I never made a dime from them because I either couldn't find them (being pre-ebay) or didn't have enough money to really go big with it. I did very well for awhile anyway, finding lots of cool stuff like cheap copies of All-Star Western #10 and Marvel Spotlight #5 (both of which I still have) and stuff like Marvel Spotlight #2 (a really nice copy I wish I still had). But I could have done a lot better. To bring it back to Rat Queens, though, after hearing Cold Water and Jez talk about it, I tried the series out and it really struck me as something that was going to get big. The fans that like it, love it and are very vocal about it. It's really getting a dedicated fan community online and in the cosplay world as well. So even though the print run for #1 was artificially inflated due to dealers ordering tons of extra copies to get the Fiona Staples 1:10 chase variant, I decided to end my two decade hiatus from speculation and I bought 20+ copies of the regular #1 last month. I sold 10 of them today for $100 total, so I've already made a profit and still have 12 copies left for myself if it ends up getting any bigger. That may not pay the rent, but it's a win in my book.

I should probably sell my Batman Adventures #12. I found two of those last year - one lower grade copy (4.0 ish due to staining) I paid $1 for at a flea market, and one mid-grade copy (looked 9.0 but had a 1/4 inch cut through the entire book) I paid $2 for at a comic show. Sold the pair online for $125. It's not exactly speculating, but it does make dollar bin diving a lot of fun.
